Cabeza Pandescura, Habitat of the Bearded Vulture

Picos de Europa National Park, Asturian Slope

Experience Description: This experience is a guided nature outing led by a UIMLA-certified mountain guide (Union of International Mountain Leader Associations) who will introduce us to the landscape, local people, birdlife, and fossils found in the surroundings of the Picos de Europa National Park.

Upon arriving at the meeting point (Bearded Vulture Mountain Center in Onís), we will visit this center managed by the Foundation for the Conservation of the bearded vulture, where we will learn about this important project on the bearded vulture and the work carried out by the foundation's specialists. During the excursion, we will ascend to Cabeza Pandescura, where we can admire a magnificent 360-degree panorama with spectacular views, especially of the Western Massif of the Picos de Europa.

We will have the opportunity to observe numerous birds, including griffon vultures and, with luck, the bearded vulture in their natural habitat.

During the hike, we will encounter shepherds with their animals and discover the important work they do.

After the ascent, the walk continues as we search for fossils in the area, incredible formations dating back 320 million years ago. This is a Scientific Ecotourism Experience, which includes a 5-hour field trip of moderate difficulty, is suitable for all ecotourists who love nature, hiking in the mountains, and observing wildlife, flora, fauna, and fossils.
