Science, Conservation, and Culture in the Extremaduran Range

This EECE takes place at "El Baldío" estate, owned by the Global Nature Foundation, located in the municipal area of Talaván, between the SPAs (Special Protection Area for birds) “Talaván Reservoir” and “Monfragüe and Surrounding Range.”

Experience Description: Enjoy a unique scientific ecotourism experience in the heart of the province of Cáceres, where the conservation of the open range and native Extremaduran livestock breeds blend together on the "El Baldío" Estate. This space, dedicated to the conservation of over 200 hectares, holds an extraordinary genetic heritage, maintaining breeds such as the white Cacereña cow, the black Merina sheep, and the black Castilian hen.

In partnership with the company Verdehesa, you are invited to explore this emblematic estate, home to these breeds perfectly adapted to the open range, key elements of this ancient agro-silvo-pastoral system that characterizes this exceptional cultural landscape typical of Extremadura.

During a guided tour of the estate lasting approximately three hours, you will discover how various actions, projects, and research conducted by the Global Nature Foundation combine nature conservation and livestock production under animal welfare standards to promote sustainable, holistic, and regenerative management of the range, its grasslands, and its trees.

Additionally, you will have the chance to observe, or participate if you wish, in many daily activities on the estate depending on the season: feeding the livestock, births, shearing, pruning oaks, sowing forage plant species, or hay harvesting, among many others.

A visit to “El Baldío” can be arranged almost any time of the year, preferably in spring and autumn, avoiding the hottest summer months between July and September.

The experience will not only be enriching from a tourism and scientific perspective but will also make a valuable contribution to maintaining the estate and its values, as 10% of the income generated from your visit will be donated to the Global Nature Foundation.
