Os Grobos, a fairytale forest

Limestone rock outcrops modeled by humidity

In the municipality of Becerreá extends the Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Cruzul- Agüeira, a natural area located in the environment of the course of the Navia and some of its tributaries and integrated into the Natura 2000 Network.

In this place we find the Cruzul holm oak grove, whose uniqueness is given by its own situation, on a steep mountain slope and on a strip of limestone rocks. Here a microclimate is generated with good conditions for the development of Mediterranean forest species that make this formation the holm oak forest located further north of Galicia.

On the other hand, at the foot of the chestnut grove of Agüeira, is located the famous Grobos forest, where towering limestone rock outcrops modeled by moisture that give this place an almost magical atmosphere. In this labyrinth of karst rocks you can enjoy a colorful spectacle of contrasts caused by the play of light and shadows that manage to penetrate between the passages and the density of vegetation that invites you to enter a parallel universe.

The Route of the Souto de Agüeira is a linear path of 2.6 kilometers and medium difficulty that starts from Ferrería and runs through the Souto de Agüeira and the villages of Cormes and Morcelle.

Very close to this natural space, the bridge over the Cruzul River was built on the route of the National VI. Built by Carlos Lemaur in the time of King Carlos III, this work reinforced the character of the municipality of Becerreá as a strategic place of connection of Galicia with the Meseta and witnessed episodes of the Napoleonic wars and the arrival of Isabel II to Galicia.
