Pre-Roman forts and megalithic monuments

Prehistoric footprints and warrior remains

Living witnesses to the history of mankind

The remains of Neanderthals found in various caves and the numerous megalithic monuments that remain in the Geopark Las Loras bring immense value to this territory. The dolmen of La Cabaña, the menhir of Canto Hito or the cave of Valdegoba are outstanding examples of the rich prehistoric heritage, testimonies that still remain of the history of mankind. The historical presence of pre-Roman settlement is distinctive in Las Loras Geopark, where some of the most relevant Iron Age forts of the Iberian Peninsula are located, which today constitute an archaeological heritage of the first magnitude. These lands were the main scenario of the Cantabrian Wars, of the resistance against the invasion of the Roman Empire. The remains of walled cities and the military camps used for their siege are proof of this. Peña Amaya, Monte Bernorio, La Ulaña and Monte Cildá are the main archaeological references, where excavation and research work continues at present.
