Our certificates:
Our ecotourism commitment:

We transmit to our visitors the values of a UNESCO Geopark.

- You will learn about the geological phenomena of the tidal flats and the biodiversity of the area, a unique ecosystem inhabited by more than 250 species

- The activity is based on the interpretation of the natural environment, observing and discovering how the different species live in this complex ecosystem

- We transmit how to conserve and protect the different forms of life with small day-to-day actions.

A sustainable Geopark

A small territory, a complex and unique orography, and landscapes and environmental values safeguarded in its protected natural areas. The Basque Coast Geopark has been part of the European and Global Geoparks Network since 2010, and was officially declared a UNESCO Global Geopark in November 2015.
In addition to this global seal and label, which undoubtedly guarantees management, planning and a commitment to conservation, culture and local development, the territory encompasses several protected natural areas such as the Protected Landscape of the Deba-Zumaia coastal stretch and three Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) included within the Natura 2000 Network.

The UNESCO figure and the protection measures in force have been fundamental to develop a model of tourism based on ecotourism, giving rise to an attractive destination for the visitor while respecting the environment.

Sustainable development

The Basque Coast Geopark is the first destination in the Basque Country to join Soy Ecoturista In 2019, both the destination and its first 22 collaborating tourism companies became part of this network, guaranteeing their commitment to nature conservation and local development.

The Geopark carries in its DNA values such as the conservation and enhancement of natural and cultural heritage as a driver of local development. Science, culture and education are the principles on which UNESCO is based and therefore the strategic axes of the Geopark.

The 2023 Agenda and the 17 SDGs are perfectly aligned with the Geopark strategy and its deployment.

Every four years UNESCO Geoparks are evaluated to verify that sustainability is present in a transversal way in their strategy and that their collaborating entities are also in tune.

Geoparkea actively participates in the Basque Ecotourism Network and in the Spanish Geoparks Forum. It is a reference destination in both contexts and a model of geotourism development.
