Romanesque

Where every corner is a masterpiece

The landscape that inspired the Romanesque

Romanesque art is one of the most powerful signs of identity of the Loras region, since one of the highest European concentrations of this art is produced here. It is difficult to find a village in the territory that does not have a Romanesque church or hermitage. This Romanesque art is unique, since, despite having large monasteries such as San Andrés de Arroyo or Santa María la Real, most of the monuments are rural churches of small size and neat architecture. These churches blend seamlessly into the landscape, providing a valuable illustration of medieval religious culture and narrating the historical times of the Christian repopulation. This is especially remarkable at a time when these lands were considered the frontier of the Christian kingdom.
