Natural Park, Biosphere Reserve: Caso and Sobrescobio

Where nature and community thrive together

A perfect balance between conservation, sustainable development and knowledge

The Redes Natural Park is included in the Regional Network of Protected Areas of Asturias in its highest category, since its proposal in the Natural Resources Management Plan of Asturias (PORNA) in 1994 and after its declaration by Law 8/96 of December 27, 1996, which highlights the presence of some of the most valuable landscapes and ecosystems of the Cantabrian Mountain Range, the beauty of its orography, its well-preserved forests, the richness of its fauna and an important river basin that supplies water to the central area of Asturias. The purposes of the declaration include maintaining the ecosystems and protecting the species and their habitats, improving the quality of life of its inhabitants, promoting knowledge of the Park and its natural and cultural values, and maintaining and improving water quality.

Subsequently, in July 2001, the Principality of Asturias promoted before the MAB Spain committee the proposal to declare Redes a Biosphere Reserve, which was approved on September 20 of the same year, thus demonstrating the balance established in the Redes Natural Park between the conservation of ecosystems and sustainable economic and human development, from the sociocultural and economic points of view, while promoting and supporting environmental education and research projects, not forgetting that, as a Biosphere Reserve, conservation of traditional forms of sustainable resource use takes on the same priority as the protection of the natural elements themselves. Without forgetting that, as a Biosphere Reserve, the conservation of traditional forms of sustainable use of resources acquires the same level of priority as the protection of the natural elements themselves. This effort to combine conservation, knowledge and dissemination is embodied in a magnificent network of trails that run through the Natural Park, about which you can get extensive information at the Reception Center of the Natural Park of Redes.
