Besalú, Santa Pau, Sant Feliu de Pallerols and the villages of the Vall d?en Bas.

Architectural gems to discover

La Garrotxa is a region in the province of Girona, in the autonomous community of Catalonia, which has a rich architectural heritage. Some of the most outstanding villages of the region are Besalú, Santa Pau, Sant Feliu de Pallerols and the villages of the Vall d'en Bas, all of which are small architectural gems worth discovering. Their rich heritage and natural charm make La Garrotxa an ideal destination for lovers of history, culture and nature.

Besalú

Important and well-preserved medieval historical-artistic complex, with a Jewish quarter, a miqve -one of the few discovered in the Iberian Peninsula-, the old church of the monastery of Sant Pere (12th century), the church of Sant Vicenç (12th century), the facade of the old church hospital of Sant Julià (12th century), the Cornellà house (12th century) and the Gothic room of the Royal Cúria. The Romanesque bridge over the Fluvià river is one of the most spectacular vestiges of the ancient county of Besalú, one of the cradles of the Catalan nation.

Santa Pau

Medieval village in which the castle stands out, a large, compact and robust building that stands at the highest point of the village, along with the arcaded square (Firal dels Bous), and the Gothic church of Santa Maria. The village maintains a physiognomy and medieval characteristics very appreciable, which gives it a great personality.

Sant Feliu de Pallerols

The old town of Sant Feliu de Pallerols, built on a lava flow, has a set of historical and architectural elements from the XIIXIII centuries, among which are the Sagrera and Cellera houses, the Firal, the medieval bridges, the Conqueta mill, the Molí Gran with its inmates, the stately houses of can Trias and can Viola and the modernist building of can Casas.

La Vall d?en Bas

Scattered throughout the valley, there are seven villages with a very unique charm: The village of Mallol, located on a hill and that was, for centuries, the administrative capital of the Viscounty of Bas; Hostalets in Bas, which has its origins in some inns located at the foot of the old royal road that went from Olot to Vic, and today is one of the most traditional pictures of the Garrotxa; Sant Esteve, in Bas, with a church of which it is worth noting its columns and capitals historians; Joenetes, a real crib village; Puigpardines, the smallest and quietest village of all; La Pinya, with one of the few remaining public washing places in the Garrotxa; and Sant Privat Bas, a small nucleus formed by a square surrounded by the church and a small group of houses, and which is accessed by a porch, forming a set of a very unique beauty.
