A sustainable Geopark
A small territory, a complex and unique orography, and landscapes and environmental values safeguarded in its protected natural areas. The Basque Coast Geopark has been part of the European and Global Geoparks Network since 2010, and was officially declared a UNESCO Global Geopark in November 2015.
In addition to this global seal and label, which undoubtedly guarantees management, planning and a commitment to conservation, culture and local development, the territory encompasses several protected natural areas such as the Protected Landscape of the Deba-Zumaia coastal stretch and three Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) included within the Natura 2000 Network.
The UNESCO figure and the protection measures in force have been fundamental to develop a model of tourism based on ecotourism, giving rise to an attractive destination for the visitor while respecting the environment.
