The Elders of the Forest

The Elders of the Forest

This protected natural area in Burgos is known for being home to one of the largest and best-preserved forests of Spanish juniper (Juniperus thurifera) in the world, with trees that are over two thousand years old.

This juniper forest covers more than 12,000 hectares and contains ancient trees that can be over 2,000 years old.

The junipers grow alongside holm oaks, gall oaks, Pyrenean oaks, and pine forests, forming a diverse ecosystem.

The understory features species such as thyme, lavender, bearberry, and other Mediterranean plants.
It is a key habitat for wildlife such as the griffon vulture, golden eagle, Egyptian vulture, and numerous mammals.

The landscape has high ecological and cultural value, shaped by centuries of traditional human activity.

In 2020, it was designated a Natural Park due to its rich natural environment and scenic beauty.
It has also been recognized with the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism.
The area includes the La Yecla Gorge, a rocky canyon that is a major tourist attraction.

The juniper forest stands out for its resilience to extreme climates and its slow growth.
It is a botanical treasure that combines biodiversity, heritage, and responsible tourism.
