Geotourism for sustainability

Geotourism for sustainability

This orographic complex has been declared a Geopark when it became part, since September 2011, of the European and Global Geoparks Networks of UNESCO. Since November 2015 it has also been considered a UNESCO WORLD GEOPARK.

The destination has been part of Soy Ecoturista, the Ecotourism product club in Spain, since 2013. It thus became one of the first certified destinations, as well as its companies, meeting a series of sustainability requirements and commitment to nature conservation and local development.

Geoparks are natural areas that preserve a unique geological heritage, a typical modeling of the landscape and places where rocks, minerals or fossils can explain to visitors, nature lovers but not necessarily familiar with geology, the history of the Earth in that place. In addition, geoparks promote research, conservation, education and social and economic development, especially by promoting geotourism.

In this sense, the Geopark works in close collaboration with Geovilluercas, the association of tourism companies and producers of the territory.

Tourism that promotes sustainable development

The Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark is committed to geotourism to guarantee the enjoyment of the destination in a responsible way and to promote sustainable development in the territory.

Geotourism goes far beyond the fact of visiting a Geopark, although everything starts there, it should be understood as a tourism that sustains and enhances the identity of a territory, considering its geology, environment, culture, aesthetic values, heritage and welfare of its residents.

Geotourism is a philosophy, it is visiting the geosites, but it is also contemplating its skies, enjoying its forests and observing its fauna, getting excited with its gastronomy, buying handicrafts and products of the territory and getting involved and interacting with the local population.

Our landscape of Appalachian morphology, sculpted over millennia, will guide you through synclines and anticlines to reach the best ecotourism experiences.

We invite you to become a geotourist visiting the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark!
