Vitoria-Gasteiz Green Belt - Zadorra Park

The Zadorra River, the most important river in the municipality of Vitoria-Gasteiz, is the protagonist of this periurban park. It runs to the north of the city and acts as a limit to its expansion. Possessing important natural values that have led to its declaration as a SCI (Site of Community Interest) within the Natura 2000 European Network of Protected Natural Spaces, the Zadorra and its surroundings are an ideal place for leisure and walking.

The integral conditioning of the river -hydraulic, environmental and socio-recreational-, in all its route of contact with the city, is being carried out in phases and sections. In the near future there will be an extensive river park , 13 km long and covering an area of 213 ha, which will act as a fundamental link in the Green Belt, between the Salburua wetlands and the Zabalgana park.

Green Belt proposals and itineraries

There are several itineraries in the Green Belt and the periurban surroundings of Vitoria-Gasteiz that allow you to visit the natural and cultural richness of this area so close to the city.

Rivers and streams, wetlands, island forests between crops and small villages typical of the Llanada Alavesa are some of the environments that you will find when walking through the parks of the Green Belt and the periurban area of Vitoria-Gasteiz.

There are 10 walks through the parks of the Green Belt and the nearby rural-natural space that can be done comfortably on foot in less than two hours. In addition, there is a circular route of 30.8 kilometers, ideal for cycling, which, like a great loop around the city, links the parks of the Green Belt.

In the Green Belt you can take a naturalistic tour. During this experience, you will have the opportunity to visit the majestic deer of Salburua. We hope you enjoy this sunrise adventure for which we recommend you bring binoculars, comfortable clothes and appropriate footwear.

You can practice birding in the park's observatories, visit the Arkaute pond in October to listen to the bellowing of the male deer that emit guttural sounds to attract females or go to the Betoño pond in spring and dare to count the duck families.

You can also discover marvelous spots by taking a circular cycling route from Ataria along the Green Belt, the route of the old Basque-Navarre Railway, the Ullibarri-Gamboa Reservoir, the Camino Real de las Postas, the Camino de Santiago and, once again, the Basque-Navarre Greenway with the Estíbaliz branch.

Inside the planetarium of Ataria you will be enveloped under the starry sky, while you see the stars and the wonders of the cosmos projected. A very attractive effect that cannot be seen in cities due to light pollution.
