Alpinism and winter mountaineering

Many of the classic ascents that in summer can be considered hiking or trekking are a real joy when the snow covers the slopes and rocks. The north faces of the main peaks are very narrow and steep and offer endless possibilities for mountaineering and feeling the power of the rock. The Hoya de la Mora, which is easily accessible by paved road, offers magnificent options from the Corral del Veleta, on the north face of this peak. You can ascend by climbing and mountaineering techniques to the mythical classic climbing routes such as the Silvia or Extraplomos, available in both summer and winter. There are other options such as the north face of Mulhacén, a must for many as it is the roof of the peninsula with its 3,479 m altitude, the west face of the Alcazaba or the ridge of the Tajos de la Virgen al Cartujo, where it will also be necessary to master ski touring to access in winter. In the easternmost area, from the Postero Alto refuge, located in the municipality of Jérez del Marquesado, you can access the Circo del Alhorí, where you will find important ice routes such as Polvos Mágicos, Nacoreta or Sol Naciente. Alpine skiing with slopes of all levels in the ski resort or ski touring and snowshoeing complete the offer of winter activities in Sierra Nevada. Mountain safety will urge you to hire a competent local guide when skiing off-piste away from the resorts. In addition, this way, you will be able to know the most technical routes of Sierra Nevada and get your best version climbing to its spectacular peaks and down with your skis by the most emblematic lines of its hidden valleys, away from the busy and noisy slopes.

Sierra Nevada by pedal stroke

The regions of the Sierra Nevada and the villages located in the mid-mountains are connected by scenic, low-traffic roads. Cycle tourism is developing in an incredible way, with companies and guides that support you in the logistics and interpret the landscape as you enter it. Some challenges on wheels are the mythical Transnevada, a circular cycling route that runs through the Sierra Nevada along 450 km, around 2,000 m of altitude. You can also pedal along the Mozarabic Way of St. James, that historic route used by pilgrims from eastern Andalusia on their journeys to Santiago de Compostela. Riding ?village to village? in any of the mountainous regions crossing valleys and mountain passes is the best way to cover long distances and take more landscapes in your retina, but if you are a biker looking for strong emotions or demanding routes that require physical and mental effort, Sierra Nevada is your paradise. Do not miss the mountain bike and ebike routes with demanding slopes throughout the Sierra Nevada and especially the climbs to the Cortijuela and Diéchar hydroelectric plant from Monachil, the route from Laujar de Andarax to the rope, to Postero Alto from Jérez del Marquesado or to the Polarda from Abrucena or Ohanes. Also noteworthy are the itineraries of Cumbres Verdes in La Zubia, the route through the chestnut grove of Aldeire or the route to the Rinconada de Nigüelas from the Aula de Naturaleza de Dílar. One of the star routes of the Sierra is the one that crosses from north to south, from the Hoya de la Mora to the Alpujarra passing by the peak of the Veleta by what was the mythical highest road in Europe, today only allowed for walkers and cyclists.
