Birds, Rivers, and Mammals Waiting to Be Discovered
The Eo River estuary is one of the best spots for waterfowl watching in northern Spain. In the fall and winter, thousands of waterfowl, shorebirds, and gulls gather here, using the wetland as a stopover and wintering ground. The Eurasian oystercatcher and the shag are two of the coast’s most iconic species.
The Eo River is one of the major salmon-bearing rivers on the Iberian Peninsula; watching the salmon swim upstream in the fall is a unique spectacle. In addition to salmon, the river is home to otters, lampreys, and the rare Iberian desman. The forests of the inland mountain ranges are home to wolves and, occasionally, brown bears.
To enjoy nature without disturbing it, remember to keep your distance from the animals, follow the signs in protected areas, and avoid unnecessary noise near nesting sites.
