Reserva Natural Parcial
In the council of Ponga is the Peloño forest, declared a Partial Nature Reserve and considered the largest forest mass in eastern Asturias. With an extension of approximately 15 km², it is recognized as one of the best preserved beech forests in Spain. Although beech is the predominant species, it is also home to magnificent specimens of oak and holly. In the higher areas, species such as creeping juniper and arbutus, among others, are common.
The lush forest and deep valleys create the ideal habitat for native fauna, where wild boars, roe deer, deer and chamois live. In addition, there is the occasional presence of brown bears and endangered birds such as the capercaillie, the black woodpecker and the black woodpecker.
The Peloño forest offers a wide variety of hiking trails to suit all tastes, allowing you to enjoy its extraordinary natural wealth.
