THE DOLOMITE MUSEUM

A journey into the past

Visitors will find a vestige of what was once the economic and social lung of the Carranza Valley: the Old Dolomite Factory Museum, just 10 kilometers from the natural park.

An industrial heritage, which unlike wanting to be forgotten to bring all the prominence to the imposing Armañón Natural Park, has been recovered in order to understand the history of a traditionally mining area.

In the years of Basque industrial splendor of the 20th century, the Carranza neighborhood of Ambasaguas was the neuralgic point of the area, thanks to the factory that exploited the dolomite deposit of Peña Ranero.

The museum is located in the old ore unloading station of the Dolomite factory. In 1956, the exploitation of the Donosa quarry began, the mineral was extracted and, by means of an aerial tramway, it was transferred from the quarry to the factory facilities. This aer ial tramway was the last one in Bizkaia and operated until 1976, when the quarry closed. During one of the quarry's exploitation works, the impressive Pozalagua Caves were found.

The Dolomite Museum gives us the opportunity to go back in time to the moment when the factory played a very important role in the industry of Bizkaia and to know the industrial heritage in a different way.
