La Garrotxa is a region in the province of Girona, in the autonomous community of Catalonia. It is characterized by its natural wealth, with a great variety of protected areas. Below, we present the main protected areas:
It is the best example of volcanic landscape in the Iberian Peninsula. It has some forty volcanic cones and more than twenty lava flows, an extension of some 15,000 hectares, 98% of which are privately owned, and 40,000 people living inside the protected natural area, with a very varied vegetation, with holm oak, oak and beech forests of enormous scenic value.
The Alta Garrotxa is a vast territory marked by deep valleys surrounded by cliffs and rock walls, which gives its name to the area: the ?garrotxes? are the ?rough and hard to walk on? lands.The landscape of the Alta Garrotxa is truly spectacular, not only for the magnificence of the relief, but also for its forest cover, dominated by holm oak and oak groves.
