Sobrarbe-Pyrenees County

Millenary mountains and a living culture

A place to enjoy in all senses

In the heart of the Pyrenean mountains, including the highest peaks, but also the most accessible mountain ranges, is the UNESCO World Geopark Sobrarbe-Pyrenees. A diverse territory nestled in a spectacular landscape where natural and cultural heritage have been coexisting for millennia.
In the rocks of our mountains is written the history of the Pyrenees, more than 500 million years full of amazing events. Ancient mountain ranges, arid deserts, deep seas, tropical deltas, glaciers? all the secrets about the origin of the mountains can be read in Sobrarbe. And all this accompanied by an exceptional flora and fauna.

The cultural legacy of Sobrarbe is no less valuable. The best of Pyrenean culture can be found in our valleys. Charming villages showing examples of popular architecture, megalithic monuments, cave paintings, countless Romanesque churches, medieval castles in breathtaking locations, popular festivals, dances, pilgrimages, ancestral carnivals or the famous descent of nabatas (almadías) down the Cinca River, music festivals are some of the arguments that attract thousands of tourists and show the degree of integration of man in the landscape.

Since 2006, the whole region has been declared a UNESCO World Geopark Sobrarbe-Pyrenees, bordering to the north with the central Pyrenees and France; to the south with the Guara and Arbe mountain ranges, and the Somontano of Huesca; to the east with Ribagorza, and to the west with the Tena Valley. It is bathed by the Cinca, its tributaries Ara and Cinqueta and other rivers that descend from the Pyrenean wall modeling the different valleys of incalculable beauty and natural value.

Physically, there are two distinct parts: Upper Sobrarbe, with a predominance of high mountain scenery, and Lower Sobrarbe, which is less rugged. It is made up of 19 municipalities with a population of 7,755 inhabitants, occupying an area of 2,202 km². Incredible folds, the last Spanish glaciers, endless caves, canyons and ravines, exceptional flora and fauna, or the last great virgin river of the Pyrenees are some of the attractions that await the visitor in the middle of a landscape of recognized prestige. The National Park of Ordesa and Monte Perdido is entirely within the Geopark, as well as part of the natural parks of Posets-Maladeta, Sierra and Canyons of Guara, and the Cultural Park of the Vero River.
