A protected area between two communities
The Río Eo, Oscos, and Terras de Burón Biosphere Reserve is one of the most unique protected areas in northern Spain. Covering more than 159,000 hectares across Asturias and Galicia, it stands as a unique example of collaboration between two regions that share the same river—the Eo—and a common understanding of the territory.
Its extraordinary diversity of landscapes and ecosystems is reflected in the numerous protection designations that recognize its environmental value. Forty-one habitat types of Community interest have been identified in the Reserve, 11 of which are priority habitats, ranging from dune ecosystems and coastal wetlands to inland rainforests.
The Eo estuary is part of the Natura 2000 Network and is also designated as a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, serving as a vital habitat for numerous waterfowl and migratory birds.
The Eo River, one of the best salmon rivers on the Iberian Peninsula, is also home to lampreys, otters, and the rare Iberian desman. In the mountainous areas, wolves and, occasionally, brown bears roam forests that are also home to the black woodpecker and unique invertebrates such as the Geomalacus maculosus slug.
Visiting the Reserve means exploring with care and curiosity: every stretch of the river, every forest, every corner of the coast, and every mountain range holds natural and cultural treasures worth discovering at a leisurely pace.
