Echoes of the past, beats of the present
Linares del Arroyo was a small village in the province of Segovia . Its history dates back to ancient times, with human settlements in the Bronze Age. During Roman times, the area was inhabited and archaeological remains of its presence have been found.
In the Middle Ages, Linares del Arroyo became a strategic point due to its location near the Riaza River and close to an important route between Segovia and Burgos . Agriculture and livestock were the main economic activities, and the town grew around the parish church of San Juan Bautista, built in the 16th century. It is still an important landmark today.
But the history of Linares del Arroyo is also marked by moments of tragedy. In the 1950s, the town underwent a radical change with the construction of the Linares reservoir.
This reservoir, intended to provide water for agriculture and urban supply, led to the flooding of the old town. Many families had to be relocated and much of the architectural heritage was lost under the waters.
Today, the reservoir remains a point of interest for visitors, who can observe the submerged remains of the ancient village when the water level allows. Each submerged ruin is a reminder of lost history and heritage, but also of the town's ability to adapt and move on. Although the old Linares del Arroyo no longer exists, its history will always be remembered.
