Essential stops

The Park has a great cultural wealth and an important historical-artistic heritage. The inventory of archaeological and historical remains and "Bienes de Interés Cultural" indicates that the area has been populated since prehistoric times. Some samples of this rich and varied heritage are: The abundant rock shelters with cave paintings. Several "vettones" (pre-Roman) settlements, origin of some villages, such as Cepeda. The Roman mining exploitations of El Cabaco. The monasteries of Peña de Francia and Batuecas, as well as different religious, military and civil constructions and remains from practically all historical periods. On the other hand, four towns integrated in the protected area have been declared "Historic-Artistic Ensemble": La Alberca, Miranda del Castañar, Mogarraz and San Martín del Castañar, and the rest of the towns preserve good examples of an exclusive traditional architecture. The valley of the batuecas is the place par excellence that perfectly identifies the essence of the natural park. Its natural pools are formed thanks to the current of the Batuecas river, which flows through the valley. These natural formations become true oases in the middle of the mountain, with fresh and crystalline waters that invite you to take a refreshing bath. The surrounding landscape, full of vegetation and biodiversity, is simply spectacular.

In the region centuries-old traditions are maintained, highlighting both folklore and traditional festivals and local crafts. In the Natural Park there is an extraordinary concentration of artisans dedicated to embroidery, goldsmithing, traditional costumes, chestnut basketry, wood and ceramics. There are several museums dedicated to some of these activities. The 15th century castle of San Martín del Castañar, for example, has been recently restored and musealized and houses the Interpretation and Visitor Reception Center of the Biosphere Reserve of the Sierras de Béjar and Francia.
