ORDIZIA TRADITIONAL MARKET

A centennial meeting of Basque culture and commerce

The first fairs of Ordizia, held around the chapel of San Bartolomé between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, were consolidated and regulated when Ordizia became a Villa. With a fixed date every Wednesday since 1512, they make it a living history of Euskadi. The market also sets the prices of many typical Basque products. A market that is a reference for the producers of Euskadi.

The traditional fair of Ordizia becomes every Wednesday a meeting place for sellers and buyers of agricultural and livestock products of the region.

The place where the market is held is covered by a structure with thick columns, and there, we will find numerous stalls of all kinds: Idiazabal cheese, fruits, vegetables and an endless number of fresh and top quality goods.

In addition to this weekly event, Ordizia hosts several important fairs throughout the year. On Wednesday of Easter week, for example, they celebrate the Artzain Eguna (shepherd's day) for the presentation of Idiazabal cheese. In September there is a special market for the Basque Festivities, and in December, the special Christmas market.
