BARANDIARAN MUSEUM

Discover the millenary Basque culture and its mythology.

José Miguel de Barandiaran, born on December 31, 1889 in the district of San Gregorio de Ataun, in the Goierri region, is considered the patriarch of Basque culture. This place, at the foot of the Aralar mountain range, is steeped in mystery and legend: the ancestral home of witches, giants and Basque heroes.

The Barandiaran Museum, although little known among tourists, is a true cultural treasure. Here one enters the magical universe of the Basque people. Through his research, Aita (father in Basque) Barandiaran rescued and documented stories, myths, tales and ancestral wisdom that would otherwise have disappeared. His work transformed our understanding of Basque prehistory and revitalized Basque mythology.

In short, visiting the museum, accompanied by a walk through Ataun, offers the possibility of not only seeing, but also feeling the mystery, as well as the beauty of the ancestral legends, which once fascinated the researcher. Thanks to José Miguel de Barandiaran, these fables will not be devoured by the passage of time and will remain in our memory forever.
