Explore the biodiversity of the Ebro Delta, where nature comes to life

The Ebro Delta is a paradise for nature lovers, as it is home to an exceptional biodiversity of flora and fauna. This protected environment, declared a Natural Park in 1983, is one of the most important wetlands in Europe and offers unique opportunities for wildlife observation.

Wildlife watching in the Ebro Delta
The Ebro Delta is famous for being a natural refuge for a large number of species of birds, fish, mammals and reptiles. It is estimated that there are more than 350 species of birds, which makes it a reference destination for ornithology. Here are some details about the most outstanding fauna:

Birds:

- Pink flamingo: Undoubtedly one of the stars of the Delta. Thousands of flamingos inhabit the lagoons of the park, especially in the Laguna de la Tancada and the Laguna de la Encanyissada.

- Little egret, cattle egret and grey heron: These birds are very common and can be seen on the banks of rivers and canals.

- Osprey and booted eagle: Birds of prey that can be seen hunting in the area.

- Aquatic birds such as the mallard, coot and little grebe are common in fresh and salt water areas.

- Terns, gulls and cormorants in the coastal and marine areas.

Fish and marine fauna:

The Ebro Delta is also an area rich in marine and river species:

- Sea bass, sea bream and eels are common in the marsh and estuarine areas.

- Catfish, a giant fish introduced in the Ebro, is very popular among sport fishermen.

- Terns, gulls and cormorants in coastal and marine areas.

Mammals and reptiles:

Although less visible than birds, the Delta is also home to mammals such as otters, wild boar and foxes. Reptiles such as the leper tortoise and various species of snakes are also common in this area.

Observation of flora in the Ebro Delta

The flora of the Delta is adapted to the particular conditions of the area, which vary between fresh and salt waters. Some of the most representative species are:

- Reeds and reeds in freshwater areas.

- Salicornias and almarjos in the saline areas and marshes.

- Reeds and bulrushes in the lagoons, creating perfect habitats for many species of aquatic birds.

- Rice plantations, a key element of the Delta landscape, are also part of the ecosystem and play a crucial role in the local economy.

Delta Birding Festival

The Delta Birding Festival is the main annual event dedicated to birding in the Ebro Delta. This festival, usually held in September, is organized by different local and conservation entities, such as the Picampall association and Iberia Nature, and takes place in the Alfacs Bay, specifically in the MónNatura Delta.
