Paleontology and archeology

A walk through history in the Granada Geopark

The uniqueness of paleontological sites

The uniqueness of the paleontological sites of ancient and recent prehistory; the diversity and complementarity with the heritage of defensive and troglodytic architecture; and the paleogeographic values and landscape diversity make the Granada Geopark an area of exceptional cultural value.

Paleontology in the Geopark

The Granada Geopark is home to a group of vertebrate paleontological sites that tell us about the biological and environmental evolution during the Pliocene and Pleistocene, being its record of the Lower Pleistocene (basal Quaternary) unique in the European context.

The human presence more than one million years ago in the Orce sites, corroborated by the discovery of a human tooth and lithic industries associated with fossil remains of many other vertebrates, is revealed as a key to understand the processes of human occupation in the European continent.

Archaeology in the Geopark:

The unique physical conditions of the territory have influenced its history, with successive processes of occupation and organization from prehistoric times to the present day. These special physical and geological conditions give the Geopark an extraordinary heritage value, where archaeological and paleontological sites abound and are diverse in space and chronology, making this destination a real time tunnel to venture into.
