Much more than a park
The Park is located south of Salamanca, on the border between Castilla y León and Extremadura. It is established on the dividing line of two hydrographic basins: the Alagón, Francia and Batuecas rivers flow into the Tajo, while the Agadón belongs to the Duero. Although it is located in the Mediterranean region, the existing altitudinal difference and the orientation of the slopes determine the existence of areas with a clear Atlantic influence, and other much warmer areas with a Mediterranean tendency. These together favor a great diversity of fauna and flora, and allow the production of cherries, grapes, olives and chestnuts. But this unique environment also contains a great cultural wealth and an important historical-artistic heritage, with five towns declared "Historic-Artistic Ensemble", enclaves with cave paintings, remains of Roman mines or hermitages and monasteries scattered throughout its territory.
Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia Natural Park has been declared and protected as a Natural Park.
As well as by the Red Natura 2000 project due to its potential contribution to restore the natural habitat, including ecosystems and biodiversity of wildlife.
Unesco declared it a Biosphere Reserve in October 2006.
