Get to know La Siberia and plan your trip
The biosphere reserves are a distinction awarded by UNESCO to territories or geographical regions, for being representative of an environment of great value and conservation, in which it is intended to develop a plan that ensures the maintenance of its values, but in turn involves an economic and social development of the territory, a commitment to reconcile the conservation of our landscapes, meadows, mountains, etc., with the economic and social development of the inhabitants of the territory and its future generations.
The UNESCO declaration in 2019 highlights the extraordinary diversity and rich landscape of La Siberia Extremadura, as well as its cultural and heritage values. Located northeast of the province of Badajoz, it is bordered to the north by the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara region (which holds the Geopark designation), to the northeast by the province of Toledo, to the east by the province of Ciudad Real and to the south by the region of La Serena.
The Siberia of Extremadura is waiting for you to discover the treasures it holds in its 155,000 hectares. Nature and man have woven the landscape of this region, as their women did with the wool of the Merino sheep, which have grazed in these fields for thousands of years. The resulting fabric could not be more surprising: hills of dense forests, pastures, olive groves, plains of pastures and water, lots of water, from the rivers Zújar, Guadalupejo, Estena and Guadiana, and its four reservoirs, Cíjara, García Sola, Orellana and La Serena, which make this the region with the most inland coast of the country.
Undoubtedly, the option that offers you more freedom to explore all its corners is by car. The Reserve is located northeast of the province of Badajoz and its road network allows you to travel comfortably by car or motorcycle. The N-502 and the N-430 are the backbone of the Biosphere Reserve.
You can arrive directly by bus from many points, and remember that the nearest airport is located in Badajoz, 194 km away. Other recommended airports are Madrid (249 km), Seville (344 km) or Lisbon (430 km).
If you come by bus, from Badajoz, you can check the combination of schedules between Interbus and Damas lines. If you travel from Madrid, the company Samar offers daily routes.
If you opt for the car, it will take you around 2h 15min if you come from Badajoz; 2h if you come from Cáceres; around 3h if you come from Madrid; 1h 40min if you come from Ciudad Real; from Córdoba 2h 30min; and 3h 30min if you come from Seville.
There are 11 municipalities in the La Siberia Biosphere Reserve: Castilblanco, Fuenlabrada de los Montes, Garbayuela, Helechosa de los Montes, Herrera del Duque, Puebla de Alcocer, Risco, Sancti-Spíritus, Tamurejo, Valdecaballeros and Villarta de los Montes.
Small villages full of popular architecture, traditions in which picturesque festivals are celebrated and an extraordinary gastronomy rich in raw materials produced in a sustainable way in the territory, such as honey, olive oil, lamb or cheese.
Any time of the year is a good time to plan your visit. Each season has a characteristic soundtrack, festivities, traditions and notorious attractions to guarantee an unforgettable experience.
Spring is especially attractive for the observation of flora and fauna associated with the ecosystems of the RB La Siberia, as the countryside bursts with colors and aromas and the buzzing of bees makes the landscapes vibrate.
In summer, while the cicadas sing uncontainable, La Siberia offers a sea of fresh water that refreshes the senses and serves as a stage for bird watching through guided kayak routes; and if the night catches you, look up and let yourself be guided by the stars under one of the clearest skies in the world.
The beginning of autumn is marked by the moans of the rutting, whose echo shakes every corner of La Siberia. Wait with respect and listen to its huge howl.
In winter, the arrival of numerous species of wintering birds shakes the stillness of the sleeping fields; every year, thousands of cranes come down to the pastures of Extremadura, and their song of trumpets shakes the cold and foggy mornings.
