The embrace of the chestnut trees
It is one of the most beautiful walks in the city. Through more than 3 kilometers of tree-lined pedestrian area, it links the center of the city with the residential area of Armentia, where the Romanesque Basilica of San Prudencio is located, considered a jewel of medieval art.
The Paseo de la Senda route begins after passing in front of the Basque Parliament and entering La Florida Park, with a botanical garden created in 1820, inspired by the French romantic gardens. On this pleasant route, surrounded by large centenary trees, is the Zulueta Palace, built in 1902 as a house-hotel and whose gardens can be visited.
Under the shelter of the trees and following the route towards the Basilica of Armentia, a range of facades of great architectural value can be glimpsed. Examples of this are: the Casa de las Jaquecas, which takes its name from the sculptures that adorn it and seem to be holding it; the seat of the Lehendakari or Palace of Ajuria Enea and the Palace of Agustin Zuloaga or Museum of Fine Arts, an eclectic building with Baroque, Romanesque and even neo-Basque decorative elements, which houses pieces of great value. Other facades found on Paseo de La Senda that attract attention are : Villa Sofia, with Arabic influences or the Armory Museum, with an important section dedicated to the Battle of Vitoria (1813). Continuing along the Paseo de la Senda you reach the sports facilities of Mendizorrotza and the Deportivo Alavés soccer stadium. In this last section is the figure of the patron saint of all Alaveses, San Prudencio, giving way to the Basilica of the town of Armentia, which dates from the twelfth century and is located in a huge green field, a place of pilgrimage every April 28.
