A real green treasure in Euskadi to enjoy.
Urkiola Mountain have an extensive network of trails created on old roads, traditional mountain routes and new paths that emerged after the declaration of the Park.
The municipality of Abadiño has two main accesses to the Park from which numerous routes can be followed: The Urkiola pass and the Atxarte gorge.
The Urkiola pass is a very popular place for pilgrims, mountaineers and all kinds of hikers. It is located in the middle of the Park at an altitude of over 700 meters and is surrounded by a beautiful mountain landscape composed of rocky peaks, pastures and lush beech forests.
The gorge of Atxarte is in a very breathtaking place as it is surrounded by huge limestone walls crisscrossed by magnificent climbing routes. A small stream of transparent waters, the Santo Cristo hermitage, an old stone bridge, the remains of an old mill and some caves where prehistoric remains were found give personality to this place.
Through the routes that we propose we can learn about the natural, historical and cultural values of Urkiola. We have a wide range of routes to choose from, from simple didactic itineraries to classic mountain ascents in which you will need to be in good physical shape. There is also the possibility of combining some of the routes we propose. Below we propose 3 routes to get into this natural space:
- PR-Bi-80. Knowing the Urkiola environment: Composed of two loops, this route offers us the opportunity to make a small mountain excursion along the slopes of Saibi or a comfortable walk with little slope along the paths and forests closest to the Alto de Urkiola.
- PR-Bi-50. Along the roads of Otxandio: A short route through the beech forests and roads of Pagadui mountain, in the surroundings of the historic town of Otxandio. A simple route that follows the course of the Urkiola River to the Mekoleta neighborhood, on the edge of the Urrunaga reservoir.
- PR-Bi 81. Surrounding Galdara: This itinerary covers the W zone of the Aramotz karst, in the Legarmendi mountain range. An endless number of caves, chasms and crevices connect the surface with the paradise of speleologists, in an environment where the Galdara caldera stands out, a karstic depression of considerable dimensions that we will skirt along our route.
