Senderismo

Walk, feel and enjoy the Maestrazgo.

The Maestrazgo has a network of trails for all audiences, from the long-distance trail nº 8 that crosses the region in several stages, to a varied network of short-distance routes that complete the offer.

SOURCE OF THE RIVER PITARQUE

One of the most beautiful routes of the region (tourist trail SL-TE 30), simple and with little difference in height (200m.), about 5 km. one way, which starts from the village of Pitarque and takes you to the source of the river between hermitages, waterfalls and rocky cliffs, where you can see griffon vultures, mountain goats and walk through a riverside forest made up of willows, poplars and alders. After gushing out of the same rock, the river continues its way through the bottom of a stepped canyon between vertical walls and whimsical shapes that together are a spectacle.

NATURAL BRIDGE OF FONSECA

A route (SL-TE 31) that starts in the neighborhood of La Aljecira (Castellote) and for 5km (one way) upstream offers spectacular views of the Guadalope River and its banks. It is surprising to arrive at your destination without being aware that you have passed over the rocky bridge and crossed to the other side of the river, until you turn around and discover the two cavities through which the river disappears. One of the cavities, of large dimensions, leads to a large cave where the water is lost and whose access is also adorned by a waterfall that allows the proliferation of the culantrillo de pozo, a plant species typical of wet places, which decorates the entire wall and completes the picture. Vultures, hawks and eagles watch from above, and you can also find wild goats, otters or crayfish.

GUADALOPE FOOTBRIDGES

The PR-TE 10 is probably one of the most spectacular trails in the Community of Aragon. A perfect route for lovers of the broken landscapes of the mountains of Teruel. This trail, in all its extension, begins in the municipality of Aliaga and ends below the Órganos de Montoro, although due to its length (20km. one way), it is advisable to do it in stages. Its main attraction are the narrow and large gorges that are crossed through walkways anchored to the rock to save the waters of the Guadalope River, which is the protagonist of the route.

CAMINO DE LOS PILONES

A path with history, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, which runs between the towns of Allepuz and Villarroya de los Pinares. This linear itinerary of 7.5 km. is punctuated in its entirety by more than a hundred stone pylons that were used for orientation in times of snow and frequent fog at that altitude. The path has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. It is also known as Camino de Jaime I because there is evidence that this king walked it on several occasions marching towards the conquest of Valencia.

BACK TO THE WATCHTOWER

This tourist and circular trail PR-TE 53, of 6km. will take you to the remains of the ancient Templar castle of Castellote and then descend to a hidden but well preserved aqueduct, and continue along the Llovedor ravine until you reach the old cobbled road that gave access to the town. You can continue the route to the recreational area of Pocico de San Juan that runs through a lush pine forest and then skirt the mountain and return along the road that gives access to the old mines of the town.
