Endless roads between mountains and rivers
The Sierra del Segura is a true paradise for those who love walking and connecting with nature. Its more than 1,600 km of marked trails run through valleys, forests, villages, and limestone quarries, offering routes for all levels and times of the year. It doesn't matter if you are an experienced hiker or traveling with your family looking for peaceful walks: you will always find a trail that will give you unforgettable moments.
Why hike here?
Because every step reveals a new landscape: crystal-clear rivers such as the Segura and the Tus, hidden waterfalls, viewpoints that suddenly open up onto endless canyons, and villages that seem to have stopped in time. Many of these trails have centuries of history, as they were ancient transhumance routes that linked villages, markets, and kingdoms. Walking along them is to relive mountain life and understand how man and nature have always coexisted in balance.
Which routes should I not miss?- Source of the Mundo River (Riópar): route to the Cueva de los Chorros, where the water flows in spectacular waterfalls over 100 meters high.
- Ruta del Zarzalar (Nerpio): a trail along the Taibilla River with footbridges, suspension bridges, and riverside forests that turn golden in autumn.
- Red Verdenace (Paterna del Madera): paths recovered from old cattle trails, ideal for lovers of mycology and wildlife observation.
- Ruta de los Miradores (Aýna, Liétor, and Elche de la Sierra): natural balconies from which to contemplate valleys and canyons that stretch to the horizon.
What flora and fauna can I see?
The Sierra del Segura is home to holm oaks, junipers, and centuries-old walnut trees. The fauna includes mountain goats, deer, wild boars, and mouflons, as well as birds of prey such as golden eagles, griffon vultures, and bearded vultures. The most attentive observers may even spot unique species such as the Valverde lizard.
What else can I discover while walking?
Hiking here is also a journey through time. The caves and shelters in the region contain cave paintings that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Many routes include guided visits to these sites, combining nature and archaeology in a unique experience.
What if I'm looking for more adventure?
The mountains also offer active tourism activities that combine sport and nature: canyoning in streams such as Los Marines, caving in the caves of Calar del Mundo, mountain bike routes, climbing in Nerpio or zip lines and adventure parks in the heart of nature.
In the Sierra del Segura, walking is much more than just exercise: it is delving into landscapes where calm and silence are part of the experience, discovering traces of history in every rock and feeling that nature still holds untouched corners to explore.
