Get to know the Geopark in a different way
Did you know that the Sierras Subbeticas were a seabed covered by the Tethys Sea? A natural wonder that was inhabited by extraordinary creatures that have been extinct for a long time, but fortunately today we recover them in the form of fossils. The Sierras Subbéticas as a whole are an authentic archaeological and paleontological museum in the open air. These Jurassic limestone rocks were used to build the streets, squares, fountains, facades of the beautiful town of Cabra, exposing the ancient seabed with a clarity and beauty that you could not find only in the countryside. Currently you can make the Jurassic Cabra Route by contacting the local tourist office, which will provide the little ones with"the perfect explorer's kit" that will help you find the most hidden fossils of the municipality.
Other options to know the Geopark in depth is to make some of the most characteristic hiking trails in the area such as the Bailon River Canyon Trail and the Pico Tiñosa Trail.
Finally, we invite you to visit the Visitor Centers of the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park:
It is the first mycological garden in Europe located in the village of Zagrilla (Priego de Córdoba). It has a botanical garden and exhibition area for the interpretation and knowledge of all species of fungi.
On the Cabra-Priego de Cordoba road, the Santa Rita Visitor Center shows visitors the geological phenomena responsible for the peculiar physiognomy of the Sierras Subbeticas. It proposes a journey into the bowels of the earth, where the varied formations caused by the modeling of water in the limestone rock appear.
