A 19th century iron way perfect for families
At the end of the 19th century, the Vía de la Plata railroad made its way through the mountains. Hundred-year-old oak trees came out of the Ambroz forests to create the sleepers on which the rails were laid, on which the first steam locomotives finally ran in 1896, hissing as they climbed from 400 meters above sea level in Plasencia to 900 meters above sea level in Béjar.
Today it is a spectacular route with tunnels, trenches, bridges and ravines, between forests and mountains, perfect for cycling or walking. There are companies that make ski lifts to make it downhill, which makes it a perfect proposal for families.
