A tapestry of nature, history and culture among rolling hills and ancestral villages.
Campana de Oropesa, an ecological corridor between the Tajo and Tiétar rivers.
Halfway between the Sierra de Gredos and the Tajo valley, we find a hidden treasure in the northwest corner of the province of Toledo, where anthropic activities have shaped the landscape for centuries. With a strong livestock tradition, Campana de Oropesa treasures magnificent pastures of holm oaks and cork oaks in an excellent state of conservation. Proof of this is the great diversity of birds of prey (black and red kite, common kite, common kite, golden eagle, short-toed eagle, goshawk, sparrowhawk, hen harrier and Montagu's harrier, etc.), including some species of birds of prey.), including some of the most emblematic and endangered bird species of the Iberian Peninsula (Iberian imperial eagle, black vulture, Bonelli's eagle and black stork). Its meadows and plains continue through the Campo Arañuelo in Extremadura until reaching Monfragüe National Park.
The influence of human activity is also reflected in the existence of wide cereal plains dotted with lagoons and temporary ponds, where amphibians and steppe birds (great bustard, little bustard, stone curlew, Iberian sandgrouse, ortega, calandra lark, caracara, etc.) are especially important.), as well as large concentrations of common cranes, plovers and lapwings in winter. A true ornithological sanctuary in the reservoirs of Rosarito and Navalcán, a refuge for cormorants and geese, complemented by the Azután reservoir where you can observe ardeidas and other species of aquatic birds, and visit the mills or cereal mills on the bed of the Tajo River.
Campana de Oropesa comprises 21 municipalities and a surface area of 1,398.85 km2. It is a historical region located in the northwest of the province of Toledo, bordering the provinces of Ávila and Cáceres, located between the rivers Tajo and Tiétar, which shares natural characteristics with the Extremadura region of Campo Arañuelo. It stands out for its flat and quiet landscapes, where livestock, agricultural and craft activities are its regional identity. Women and men have worked hard to shape these landscapes and create art with their land, such as the pottery of Puente del Arzobispo, and with their hands making the famous embroidery of Lagartera.
Its flat relief and its network of roads and trails allows you to travel through the region and visit all its protected natural areas of the Natura 2000 Network. It offers a wide variety of routes through its meadows, steppes and reservoirs of the Tiétar Valley, listening to the bellowing of the deer and watching the flight of cranes and birds of prey. Entering the riparian forests of the Guadyerbas River transports you to wooded areas of other latitudes, which encloses a high floristic diversity.
You can go on foot or by bicycle through the western and eastern Leonese ravines that cross the region. In Calera y Chozas you can enjoy the first kilometers of the greenway of La Jara. It is an ecotourism destination adjacent to the Geopark Villuercas, Ibores, Jara, and the region of La Vera and the Sierra de Gredos.
The famous 12th century Oropesa Castle stands as a lookout over the meadows and plains that stretch between the rivers Tajo and Tiétar, from which to contemplate the urban birds (lesser kestrel) and the plains and traditional crops of all the neighboring villages.
The cultural tourism experiences are varied: visit the castle of Oropesa, visit the archaeological sites of dolmens, granite boars carved by the Vetons, sharing the livestock culture of the south of the province of Avila; explore the ancient Andalusian medina Basak (City of Basques), contemplate the ancestral houses of Mudejar architecture of its villages, know their local crafts (pottery, embroidery, blankets and furniture), or taste its typical gastronomy (Toledo partridge, migas, deer, Iberian pork, etc). Wells, fountains, troughs and water troughs dot the fields and pastures of these livestock landscapes.
The exclusive and unique gastronomy of a region where you can taste all kinds of organic and traditional products, many of them from popular dishes with humble origins, which have acquired rank and category in the updates of its excellent catering establishments. Enjoy its handicrafts, ceramics and embroidery with international fame.
