A sustainable destination with a future
Sierra de las Nieves is committed to an internationally recognized model of sustainable tourism. It is part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves and the Mediterranean Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve. The Sierra de las Nieves Association of Municipalities, together with its member tourism businesses, works to preserve the natural and cultural values of the region, offer authentic experiences, and ensure that every visit contributes to the sustainable development of the twelve municipalities that make up this unique area. The region is committed to ecotourism, which contributes to conservation and local development.
The Sierra de las Nieves is one of the destinations with a long history of promoting sustainable tourism. In 1995, it was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a recognition of the exceptional nature of its natural values and the commitment of its communities to conservation. To earn this distinction, it is necessary to plan and promote sustainable tourism development based on three pillars:
- Promoting local economic development: Tourism must directly benefit the local population through the marketing of artisanal products, local cuisine, and local guide services.
- Promoting environmental education and research: Visitors must actively participate in preserving the environment. The study and interpretation of heritage, as well as the improvement of ecological awareness, are encouraged.
- Ensuring biodiversity conservation: Tourism businesses and services must adhere to reputable environmental sustainability certifications that align with the Reserve’s own objectives
Every 10 years, UNESCO evaluates compliance with these principles to maintain the designation.
In 2007, it obtained the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas from the EUROPARC Federation (CETS), integrating local tourism businesses into a common plan for sustainable tourism. Sierra de las Nieves maintained this accreditation until 2017, and notable projects during this period included improving the trail network, interpreting natural and cultural heritage, promoting local products, and developing a diverse, high-quality ecotourism offering for all types of visitors.
In 2006, it joined the Intercontinental Mediterranean Biosphere Reserve, which connects territories on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar.
Since 2021, its designation as a National Park has strengthened the framework for protection and responsible tourism.
The Sierra de las Nieves Association of Municipalities acts as the coordinating body for the region, coordinating structures for citizen and business participation. In 2026, it joined the Ecotourism Association of Spain, assuming the role of local managing body, and promoted the destination’s membership—along with a selection of local businesses—in the Ecotourism in Spain product club and its Soy Ecoturista brand.
Tourism companies affiliated with Soy Ecoturista commit to quality, environmental respect, local employment, and the promotion of local culture and products.
