Cabañeros is one of the green lungs of Castilla-La Mancha, where 8 villages form a unique identity and are surrounded by the incredible Cabañeros National Park, one of the best preserved Mediterranean forests in Europe, which is located between the provinces of Ciudad Real and Toledo. Since its declaration as a national park in 1995, Cabañeros has evolved to become a benchmark for ecotourism and protection, integrating traditional human activities with biodiversity conservation.
Landscape and scenery go hand in hand in this destination, dominated by extensive crags, steep mountain ranges and dense forests, populated by the most emblematic species such as the Iberian deer, the black stork, the black vulture, the imperial eagle or the Iberian lynx.
Alcoba, Horcajo de los Montes, Navas de Estena, Retuerta del Bullaque, Hontanar and Los Navalucillos make up the Area of Socioeconomic Influence of the Cabañeros National Park, which together with El Robledo and Navahermosa form the territorial scope of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism and delimits what we know as Cabañeros destination.
Cabañeros owes its name to the old "cabins" that transhumant shepherds and charcoal burners used to live in. Even today, we can still find some examples of the typical "hut" or "cabin" in Visitor Centers or information points of the National Park. Its inhabitants have lived in harmony for centuries with nature, with the Mediterranean forest that we breathe today.
More than 40,000 hectares of National Park to enjoy ecotourism experiences, which also integrate traditional human activities such as transhumance or livestock activity, which help to preserve its biodiversity.
We are also a Starlight destination, which has the only Astronomical Tourism Center in the province of Ciudad Real with an impressive planetarium. In addition, we are in Natura 2000 Network territory and for years, working hard on sustainability through the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism, reinforced in recent years by the Tourism Sustainability Plan in the National Park of Cabañeros.
