Explore the Beauty of the Aiako Harria Natural Park

A unique destination in the foothills of the Pyrenees in Gipuzkoa

The Aiako Harria Natural Park is an enclave of singular beauty located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, at the eastern end of Gipuzkoa.
The three main peaks are Irumugarrieta ( 806 m), Txurrumurru ( 821 m) and Erroilbide (843 m) and you can reach them by various well-marked routes.
From Aiako Harria you will admire the Bay of Txingudi, with the towns of Hondarribia, Irún and Hendaye; Mount Jaizkibel and the valley of Oiartzun. The Aiztondo ravine, with a 100-meter waterfall, offers a unique landscape.

Within the rocky mass of Aiako Harria there are dozens of shafts and mining galleries. The mine of Arditurri (Oiartzun), offers a very interesting visit from the House of the Natural Park, which was once the laboratory of the mines. From here you can access the mining exploitation that took place from Roman times until 1984.

The proximity to the French border led military engineering to focus on the mountainous elevations of the area to install in the territory of the current park some easily visitable fortifications.

The interpretation center of the natural park is located in one of the accesses to the natural park Aiako harria, in Oiartzun. It offers a resounding mining landscape that, on the surface, presents imposing tailings dumps, open-pit quarries, inclined planes and earthworks, mine mouths, old mine buildings and even the railroad line that transported the ore to the port of Pasaia, which has been converted into a pedestrian and greenway. The human footprint is even more extensive in the subsoil, with dozens of kilometers of galleries.
