MONASTERIES, CHURCHES, AND ROMANESQUE ARCHITECTURE

A place that invites you to reflect

A place that invites you to reflect

When visitors arrive in the Ribeira Sacra for the first time, it takes only a few minutes to realize why this region has been a refuge for monks and hermits since the Middle Ages. A sense of calm, peace, and contemplation permeates the air everywhere. As a result of their presence, the region boasts an exceptional heritage, highlighted by monasteries, churches, and Romanesque art.

This ecotourism destination boasts true gems such as:

Monastery of Saint Stephen of Ribas de Sil (Ourense)

Built between the 12th and 18th centuries (although tradition holds that Santo Estevo was founded in the 6th century by Saint Martin of Dumiense), this monastery, located on the south bank of the Sil Canyon, is undoubtedly one of Galicia’s most outstanding monuments and is part of the Paradores network.
The monastery is open to the public free of charge year-round. The church offers both self-guided and guided tours on certain days of the week. It is recommended to check the schedules, as they may vary depending on the time of year.

Monastery of Santa Cristina de Ribas de Sil (Ourense)

Boasting a location that is as picturesque as it is strategic, this small Benedictine monastery dates back to the 10th century and features a Romanesque church from the 12th and early 13th centuries.
During Holy Week and in the summer, access is only permitted via the shuttle bus service. Private vehicles are not allowed outside the monastery’s opening hours.

Monastery of San Salvador de Ferreira, in Pantón (Lugo)

It is the only women’s monastery in the Ribeira Sacra that is still home to a religious community. Founded in the 10th century, it joined the Cistercian Order in the 12th century. It still houses its 12th-century Romanesque church.

Church of Santa María de Nogueira de Miño, in Chantada (Lugo)

In addition to its location at the top of the Cabo do Mundo bend, this building is notable for its interior, which is filled with murals that have earned it the nickname "the Galician Sistine Chapel." Don't forget to book your ticket for the tour.

Not to mention many other churches, such as San Paio de Diomondi, San Estevo de Atán, San Miguel de Eiré, San Pedro de Rocas, Santo Estevo de Ribas do Miño, and San Fiz de Cangas. Discover these and other religious buildings at https://turismo.ribeirasacra.org/es/monasterios
