La Palma must-sees

- The Bosque de Los Tilos: cradle of our Biosphere Reserve that was born in that small farm and gradually expanded its territory until today that overflows the island itself. It is a forest of the tertiary era, humid, fresh and almost magical, it will make you fly to remote places, perhaps in other continents.

- La Caldera de Taburiente: it is the National Park that occupies the center of the island. It is an immense depression in the form of a cirque, one of the largest of its kind in the world, which became a great building of volcanic origin of up to 4,000 meters that after strong landslides and the constant action of the elements on it forms this cleft surrounded by peaks whose slope can reach 2000m., as if it were the mold of a great mountain. A great variety of plant and animal species have developed here, including a large number of endemic Canary Island species such as the Canary Island pine and tajinastes, as well as the famous Rook, which is the symbol of La Palma.

- The Roque de los Muchachos: This is the highest point of the island, at more than 2400 meters above sea level. From here, the panoramic views are simply breathtaking, allowing you to observe the Atlantic Ocean and, on clear days, even other islands of the Canary archipelago. In addition, the Roque de los Muchachos is home to one of the most important astronomical observatories in the world, where the clean and clear sky of La Palma will allow you to admire the stars like never before.

- Land of volcanoes: La Palma has been formed through millions of years of volcanic eruptions. Volcanoes have played a fundamental role in creating its rugged topography and fertile soils.

Volcanic activity on La Palma has been documented since pre-Hispanic times. Historic eruptions, such as that of the San Juan volcano in 1949 and the Teneguía in 1971, have left scars on the landscape and have been crucial events in the lives of the island's inhabitants. However, one of the most significant and recent events in the volcanic history of La Palma is the eruption of the new Cumbre Vieja volcano, also known as Tajogaite Volcano.

- The Fuencaliente Salt Flats: It is a place that enchants, it brings together all the functions of our Biosphere Reserve: it is a site of scientific interest, a place of passage for migratory birds. It is a sample of the small productive industry that once knew how to make its way and stay standing thanks to the work of a family. And it is landscape, gastronomy, local products and the essence of a summer sunset. You cannot be in La Palma without visiting this place.

- A visit to the local markets: Immerse yourself in the daily life of the people of La Palma by visiting the local markets. There is almost one per municipality, and each one has its own idiosyncrasy, some of them, more bustling and popular like the one in Puntagorda; others more traditional like the one in Villa de Mazo and El Paso; and others of more recent creation that are already gaining importance like the one in Puntallana or Barlovento. In them you can find fresh and authentic products from the hands of their producers and a great representation of the abundant local craftsmanship. There is no better way to get to know the culture and people of La Palma than exploring its markets.

- The black sand beaches: La Palma is famous for its black sand volcanic beaches, which offer a unique and breathtaking landscape, especially those more pristine and wrapped by the rugged surrounding relief. Enjoy a day of sun and sea on beaches such as Los Cancajos, Tazacorte, Charco verde, even Santa Cruz de La Palma or Bajamar, but do not miss other wilder beaches where the dark sand contrasts beautifully with the deep blue of the ocean. But always check the bathing conditions, as the tides have the strength of the open sea.

- Our network of trails: La Palma is a paradise for hikers, with a network of well-marked trails to suit all levels of ability. From easy or circular hikes, to more challenging routes. There is a trail for every type of hiker, allowing you to explore the island's contrasting nature at your own pace.

- Taste the "dulcitos" and liqueurs: La Palma's gastronomy would not be complete without its delicious sweets and liqueurs. Taste typical products such as rapaduras, almendrados and malvasia wines, which will leave a sweet taste on your palate and a smile on your face.

- Popular gastronomy: Enjoy the authentic Palmeran cuisine in the local restaurants and grills. Try traditional dishes such as papas arrugadas con mojo, grilled cheeses, chicharrones (similar to gofio crusts), grilled meats, fish, fried, boiled or "a la espalda" (which we say when the fish is opened and put on the griddle to brown), which will offer you a feast of unique and memorable flavors. Always consult the freshness of the day and the type of cooking appropriate for each product.

- Taste our wines: La Palma is also a land of vineyards, with a long winemaking tradition that is reflected in the quality of its wines and is endorsed by its Denomination of Origin "LA PALMA". The abrupt orography also contributes to the production of different varieties depending on the area, and the bioclimatic factors, which give them their own character and personality.

- You cannot miss the "Queso Palmero": This goat cheese, produced in an artisan way, is one of the gastronomic treasures of the island. Its intense flavor and creamy texture make it a real delicacy that you can not miss. The fresh cheese, here called "queso blanco", "queso tierno", you can find it smoked and delicious for its characteristic flavor. But also consult for the semi-cured and cured cheeses... that also have the Denomination of Origin "La Palma" and others with some seasonings such as paprika or gofio, are a jewel to discover.

- Discover the organic farms: Visit the organic farms of La Palma and learn about the sustainable agricultural practices used to grow fruits, vegetables and other products of the island. You will learn about the importance of organic farming and taste fresh and healthy products km0.

- Try the "sea and mountain": La Palma offers a unique combination of sea and mountain, allowing you to enjoy both experiences in a single day. Start your day exploring the island's trails, visiting viewpoints, and ravines... and end it with a refreshing swim in the sea, or vice versa. This duality is one of the many wonders that make La Palma a unique destination.

- With a Caribbean flavor. In case you didn't know... for many years, sometimes entire families, and sometimes only the men, emigrated mainly to Venezuela and Cuba, in order to raise their families and make a fortune in "the Americas". You can perceive this imprint in our culture, starting with how common it is to find Venezuelan food such as arepas, cachapas, tequeños, fried yuka, etc. on the menus of the cafeterias. And in the famous celebration of "Los Indianos" that takes place every Carnival Monday, everyone recreates the return of those who emigrated, who came back wearing guayaberas and white clothes, caricatured with humor, with accessories such as suitcases and wads of bills, of the luck they had on the other side of the ocean.
