Wine Tourism Experience at Pago de Almaraes Winery

During this experience at the Pago de Almaraes Winery, you’ll immerse yourself in the unique landscape of the Granada Geopark, in Benalúa de Guadix, with breathtaking views of the north face of the Sierra Nevada. This is a region steeped in history, where the Machurris—an ancient settlement—lies right next to the winery, connecting us to the roots of this place and the origins of the Almaraes Trail.

During the visit, you’ll get an up-close look at a winemaking process far removed from industrial methods. Here, the harvest is done by hand and is demanding—a truly heroic form of viticulture shaped by the region’s conditions, where the grapes are picked in the height of summer and brought to the winery to begin a meticulous, artisanal process: destemming, pressing, fermentation, and aging.

One of the most special moments is the tour of the barrel room, located in a spectacular clay cave spanning over 3,600 m², where the wines age in American and French oak barrels, taking advantage of the natural conditions of the environment.

The experience concludes with a tasting of five to six wines, accompanied by local products such as regional cured meats and artisanal bread from a traditional oven, highlighting the region’s cuisine and producers.

An authentic experience that will allow you to understand wine from its origins, in direct connection with the landscape, history, and the people who make it possible.

Discover the character of the Geopark through its wines and its people.

Badlands, caves, and wine

The Granada Geopark is a region where the landscape surprises you at every turn. Ravines, badlands, caves carved into the earth, and lookouts that seem to peer out to the edge of the world come together to form one of the most unique landscapes in Europe.

The Geopark’s Badlands, Caves, and Wines experience invites you to discover part of this region aboard a 4x4 vehicle, combining geology and nature with local culture and cuisine.

The route begins at the meeting point (Guadix fairgrounds), from where participants head out along the Lugros trail in 4x4s, traversing a landscape shaped over millions of years by erosion toward one of the region’s most spectacular natural viewpoints. During the tour, several interpretive stops are made to understand the Geopark’s geology and observe the spectacular nature of its badlands. One of the most impressive spots is known as the End of the World Viewpoint, from where visitors can contemplate the magnitude of this arid landscape, deeply sculpted by time.

Along the route, local guides—Guillermo, José Antonio, or Toni—share their deep knowledge of the Geopark, interpreting the landscape and explaining how geology has historically shaped the way of life of its inhabitants.

The itinerary allows you to discover everything from historic farmhouses to various types of traditional caves—from shelter caves and fortress caves to ancient dwellings dug into the earth—used for centuries, first for protection and later as homes, showcasing the population’s adaptability to the harsh conditions of the environment.

The experience culminates with a visit to several cave-dug wineries, where you’ll tour the vineyard (when possible), see the facilities, and enjoy a tasting of wines produced in the region. During the visit, there’s also a picnic featuring local, farm-to-table products: cheeses, cured meats, bread, olive oil, and produce from the garden. A perfect way to round out the tour by connecting landscape, culture, and cuisine.
