Sierra de las Nieves National Park

The most unique Spanish fir forest in Europe

The most unique Spanish fir forest in Europe

The Sierra de las Nieves National Park was designated in July 2021 (Law 9/2021), becoming Spain’s fifteenth national park and the most recent one designated to date. It covers an area of 22,979.76 hectares and is located in the Serranía de Ronda, in the province of Málaga. Its highest point is Pico Torrecilla, at 1,919 meters above sea level, the highest peak in western Andalusia.

The park’s greatest treasure is its Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo) forests, a relict species from the Tertiary period that survived the ice ages in these mountainous enclaves. This is an endemic species with a very limited distribution, found in only a few mountain ranges in the provinces of Málaga and Cádiz and in northern Morocco. The pinsapo forests of Yunquera and Tajo de la Caína are the most extensive and spectacular.

In addition to the Spanish fir, the Sierra is home to holm oak forests, high-mountain kermes oak forests, cork oak forests, and Mediterranean scrub. Its fauna is equally unique: golden eagles, griffon vultures, mountain goats, roe deer, mouflon, otters, and kingfishers are some of the species that inhabit this area.

The park’s karst geology offers a landscape of sinkholes, karst formations, chasms, and caves of great scientific value. The Quejigales-Torrecilla karst is one of the most notable karst formations in Andalusia.

The mountain range’s name comes from the snow on its peaks, which was once stored in natural snow pits to supply ice to the province’s villages during the summer.
