Walking through the bowels of lava

On June 23, 1949, the earth opened up in several places and a gigantic stream of lava poured into the Aridane Valley and into the sea. The lava created several caves and tunnels. This ecotourism experience takes you inside one of these volcanic tubes. It offers a different perspective on the natural diversity of La Palma that surprises even those who think they know the island inside out.

This experience will allow you to venture inside the lava flow of the San Juan volcano, which originated from its 1949 eruption in the Aridane Valley and has been declared a Natural Monument.

After exploring the surface of this recent volcanic flow, equipped with helmets and headlamps, we will be amazed by an enormous cave. What are those stalactites and cave paintings we see there? Why were rituals held here to treat birth traumas, and what is it that shines like stars on the ceilings? We will reveal these and other secrets in this exciting cave adventure.
We will first walk along an outdoor walkway, from where we can see the curious lava structures and formations from above. We will explain the peculiarities of volcanism, how a lava tube is formed, and what these structures have been used for over thousands of years. Well equipped, we will venture inside the cave and marvel together at the power of nature in the Cueva de las Palomas volcanic tunnel.
