Wild North

Soaring in the gentle midday breeze, we follow the flight of the bearded vulture through the natural paradises of the north. Two weeks of unforgettable experiences in the Wild North. We will travel through the most impressive landscapes of the mountain range, through steep valleys, endless forests and crystalline lakes. What will we see? Travelers are accompanied by a specialist guide, with extensive knowledge of birds, butterflies and flora. We will explore the biodiversity of the mountain, subalpine and alpine regions of the Cordillera, visiting the natural park Dunas de Liencres and Costa Quebrada, Liébana, Picos de Europa national park, Ponga natural park and Somiedo natural park. Brown bear, bearded vulture, wallcreeper, red rock thrush, butterflies, orchids... - Birds. Our route runs under the flight of the bearded vulture, which we will get to know in depth through its recovery plan with the FCQ. But the peaks and valleys through which it flies are home to more than a hundred species of birds, among which we can find the wallcreeper, the black woodpecker, the medium-sized woodpecker, the red-breasted woodpecker or the blue-breasted woodpecker. - Butterflies. With their spectacular colors, butterflies are a fundamental part of the ecosystems we will visit. The Picos de Europa are a "hot-spot" of lepidopteran biodiversity, counting within the National Park with more than 130 species of diurnal butterflies, being this number higher if we include the environment of the Park. We will be accompanied by fluttering species such as the apollo (Parnassius apollo), antbirds (Phengaris nausithous, Ph. arion) or the lopinga (Lopinga achine) - Cantabrian brown bear. On the way we will learn about the happy story of the recovery of the bear in our mountains. Through its conservation program, with the help of the FOP, we will learn all about this mammal, which we will try to see in its natural environment. And through its lands we will have the company of many other species such as the wild cat, the chamois, the deer, as well as the traces of multiple species such as the marten, the genet or the badger. - Flora. The richness of the landscapes of our trip is accompanied by a great diversity of flora. More than 50 species of orchids, with wonders such as Dactylorhiza insularis, alpine and subalpine flora (Pulsatilla rubra, Gentiana sp...), in addition to the lush forests, valleys and mountain meadows. We will enjoy all the natural wonders that the road offers us, in the framework of the most spectacular landscapes of the Wild North. An unforgettable journey through the natural spaces of the Cantabrian Mountains in which we will discover the Natural Park of the dunes of Liencres and Costa Quebrada, Liébana, the National Park of Picos de Europa on its three sides (Fuen-te Dé, Covadonga and Valdeón-Sajambre), the Natural Park of Ponga, the Ribadesella estuary reserve and the Natural Park of Somiedo.

La Berrea en Saja-Nansa
Saja Besaya is one of the best areas of the Cordillera Cantábrica to enjoy the visual and sonorous spectacle of the bellowing of the deer. For this we have designed this experience that combines the route interpreted by a guide of the company Cantabria Experiential, with the pleasant and replenishing rest in the cottage La curva de María, magnificently nestled in the heart of the natural park Saja Besaya.
Simple route that ranges from 8 to 10 km of total distance with a little steep slope. During the same the specialized guide will be telling us interesting facts about the species and about La Berrea. We will stop at different observation points or every time we detect a specimen, from groups of females with calves to large males. Observations are made with individual binoculars, a long-range telescope and a camera with a powerful zoom. These can vary in time and distance, we do not chase the animals, our goal is to cause the least possible impact.

Filandeiras, the traditional trade
The spinning of wool (filado, as they say here) is a technique that is disappearing. In Casa Soto, a hotel full of history located in Vegadeo, we have learned from the local women who used to do it and we propose to recover the technique and utensils necessary to develop it through this experience that we want to share with our customers.
In the past, in the rural areas of this reserve, it was common for women, at the end of their chores and lit by a candle, to spin wool to make clothes for the family until sleep overcame them. Washing the wool, scutching, carding, spinning, twisting and socking. These are the steps necessary to make socks.
We offer our customers, a demonstration workshop of these tasks. For them, we will bring wool from local sheep, washed in our rivers and old and modern tools, so that they can learn part of our ethnography and help to recover a memorable trade.

Travel and accommodation are at the client's expense, for greater comfort and flexibility in the visitor's time. We take care of the two guided bird watching activities around these two spectacular birds. La Esfoyaza. Work of our grandparents
One of the traditional celebrations of "LA SERONDA" – of the autumnño - and that took place in rural Asturias for centuries, when the maíz was the livelihood of the family and to a lesser extent, of the animals, was "LA ESFOYAZA". The Esfoyaza was a work that was done in community and in which the neighbors of the town participated. Mozas and waiters collaborated in the different esfoyazas that were celebrated in the houses of the locality.
The esfoyaza was not only a community work, it was also a meeting place where, during or after finishing the task, festivities, games and a feast were held. The feast for the participants in the "Esfoyaza" was known as "GARULLA". It was normal that, once the "Esfoyaza", the owners of the house invited those who had helped them. In the "Garulla" could be tasted, omelettes, hot boroña with ham, cheeses, apples, hazelnuts, nuts, cider ....
This experience proposes a weekend with two nights of accommodation in the Casona de Amaido, with breakfasts based on the main element: the corn, and the workshop on the Esfoyaza and the presentation of the territory, the Biosphere Reserve of the Eo, Oscos and Terras de Burón River.

Getting to know the bees in the Izki natural park

In the village of Apellániz, located in the Alavesa Mountains, we will visit the apiary, located in the largest oak forest Quercus pyrenaica in Europe, along with beech, linden, chestnut, lavender, thyme and heather.

In a magical, novel, unique and unrepeatable experience, in which we will perform the tasks of a beekeeper in his day to day. We will see how bees make honey, collect pollen along with wax and propolis. We will learn to care for and respect our environment and its inhabitants.

The singular point of this experience with respect to others is to observe a living being, an insect: the bee, whose structuring of the hive is a perfect example of teamwork, organization of space and distribution of tasks, where the common good prevails above all. To be able to enjoy a bee colony whose simple allusion awakens in humans and especially in children a somewhat magical and mysterious fascination. To be able to see firsthand the inside of the hive in which there are three castes: the queen, the workers and the drones. The queen, mother of all the members of the hive, lays about a thousand eggs a day. She can live up to five years feeding exclusively on royal jelly. To be able to catch some drones, destined exclusively to procreation and that in autumn when the food begins to be scarce are pierced by the stings of the workers. To feel the workers, the most numerous of the hive, being able to reach 90,000 in summer. They live about 45 days in summer and about six months in autumn and winter. They are in charge of caring for and feeding the brood, building honeycombs, carrying pollen, water and nectar. They also clean and protect the hive. Participating for a few moments in the hive management plan, which consists of individualized monitoring of each hive throughout the year in order to attend specifically to the needs that arise. It can be summarized in a first spring period in which the hives are placed as they are required. During the summer, swarming is controlled. At the end of the summer period, the honey supers are removed. With an autumn revision in which their reserves are checked, the beekeeping year is concluded. All this is shown from the deep respect for nature and the environment that we must transmit to the new generations.

The world of bees revolves around the weather, the climate. Bees live depending on the sun, the rain, the temperature, the wind, and so while sunny and warm days are favorable for their visit, cold, windy and rainy days are not advisable. Therefore, the experiences will be organized depending on the weather. In rainy and/or cold weather the visit to the apiary in the natural park can be made, but it is impossible to access the inside of the hive because in these circumstances the bees are very aggressive and it can be painful to do so.

This experience gives the visitor the option to participate from the very first moment. As soon as you arrive in Apellániz and find yourself immersed in a place where its buildings evoke other times, the traveler's curiosity will be aroused. Likewise, the natural environment that surrounds this enclave with its majestic beech forests and enigmatic chestnut groves will provoke in the visitor the need to ask about its origins and singularities. On the other hand, the talk in which the experience is contextualized gives rise to multiple questions about the world of bees on which the essence of the experience revolves. The transfer to the apiary in which we will cross the interior of one of the most beautiful natural parks of the Basque Country and whose transit is restricted to road traffic will be another of the key moments of questions. The visit to the apiary, for most of the participants will be a new, unique, unrepeatable experience and why not, in a way, disturbing to be surrounded by millions of bees. The look inside a beehive where we will discover the ins and outs, curiosities and mysteries of the life of the bee will probably offer the most participatory moments of the experience and will create a memory difficult to forget. The subsequent return will give much to talk about exchanging sensations and emotions. We therefore understand that any moment of the day should be conducive to the participation of the visitor, as we must not forget that it is the visitor, the traveler, and his or her enjoyment, after all, the fundamental axis on which our work and our participation in this initiative revolves. It is therefore their participation that is fundamental, as it will determine whether this experience will be positive, rewarding and long-lasting.
We understand that the essence of this experience is the world of sensations, seeing, smelling, hearing, tasting and thanks to them the traveler will fix the concepts that from the first moment the guides will try to transmit throughout the morning.

In principle, this experience is focused on the traveler observing the natural world, the world of bees. This means that the places where we will find ourselves will lack human presence, which is on the other hand one of the attractions of the visit. As the village of Apellániz is small, the presence of neighbors is scarce. The guides of the experience as natives of the region will be in principle the representatives of this local population. At lunchtime visitors will be able to interact with the locals. Although, as we have already mentioned, the traveler looking for this type of experience will see the relative solitude of the place as an incentive.

Romanesque hermitages of La Garrotxa
The Garrotxa region is one of the territories of Catalonia with more Romanesque buildings.
Many of these buildings are small hermitages scattered throughout the territory and located in strategic places: mountain tops, valley bottoms, volcanic cones, cliffs and cliffs.
Access to many hermitages is by historic roads that formerly linked them to nearby villages or to the most important farmhouses in the region. Some of these paths are still well preserved and hide small bridges and fresh water fountains that accompanied them.
The corners of the Vall de Bianya are the shelter of up to 16 Romanesque hermitages. A valley floor with crops and pasture meadows, accompanied by clippings of oak forests carvallo, with many scattered farmhouses, configures the current landscape, the result of an intense history.
On the other hand, the hermitages of the vall del Corb, next to the Fageda d'en Jordà (beech forest) and the ancient lava flows, have been writing the history of the territory for centuries.

Craftsmanship of the rural landscape

Cultural landscapes are born as a result of the anthropization of the territory, through artisanal production processes. The recognition of artisanal cultural landscapes allows us to approach ways of conceiving heritage in a holistic, interconnected manner, considering craftsmanship as a privileged expression of the ways in which human beings relate to the territory they inhabit. Our experience-workshop of crafts of the territory is a form of knowledge and communication that perpetuates its cultural values through clay, wool and jet. As a result of an archaeological excavation, the pottery workshop integrated in the Ecomuséu Ca l’Asturcón started a process of recovery of forms and decorations of the ancient pottery of Lliñeru (Villaviciosa), an initiative of a potter originally from the area Faro (Oviedo) seduced in the eighteenth century by the landscape of the Ría de Villaviciosa that inspireá its artisan production for several generations. We will approach the process of elaboration of wool from the fleeces of our own herd of oveyas xaldas, the native breed that participated with its presence in the area just a century ago in the management of our landscape and the cultural and ethnographic wealth of local family economies. Asturian Jurassic jet comes from trees that populated the area more than 60 million years ago. The most important deposits are located in our coastal area known as Les Mariñes, between Gijó n and Villaviciosa from the Upper Jurá sico Superior. Used since prehistoric times as an amulet due to its magical properties, jet is closely linked to the Camino de Santiago. We will finish this 4 days/3 nights experience staying in our village house with a Microtheater performance in the hó rreo to complete the experience with the enhancement of the hó rreo, a fundamental identity element in the Asturian rural culture, using theater as an emotional language. Additional information: With this experience we invite you to experience traditional artisan knowledge and discover how craftsmanship gathers the images and symbols by which our diverse communities feel their experience of being from this territory. - Day 1 Arrival at La Quintana de la Foncalada – Ecomuséu Ca l’Asturcón in Argüeru (Villaviciosa), near the Rí RNP;a de Villaviciosa, where you will be welcomed with a small homemade, local or organic snack that will comfort you and make you take ground. - Day 2 In the farm of the rural lodging itself, we will discover in the morning the characteristics of the autochthonous varieties in danger of extinction: asturcones, bermeya goats, gochu asturcelta, pitas pintas and in particular the xalda sheep During the visit you can learn about the farm animals, the endangered native breeds, the commitment to biodiversity, identify the natural resources of the farm, the traditional craft activities of the area (wool, pottery, jet). At the end of the visit we propose a pottery workshop to discover the local craft production and its techniques over time. Simple techniques of modeling, working on the potter's wheel and firing. During the workshop a traditional piece will be made with the purpose of taking away after the experience a bowl type Lliñeru as recorded in a will of 1789 that speaks of “Quatro escudillas de barro (…) two dishes and another dish of Billaviciosa” In the afternoon, we will conduct a workshop of wool from our herd of oveyas xaldas. We will learn how to wash, scarm and card wool with manual carders. Finally, we will learn the technique of wet felting and we will create a small piece. They say that working with wool has something more magical, organic and special; you will see how the fiber of the fabric is gradually changing between your hands, taking body, taking shape, transforming and changing before our eyes, as if it were a living being. - Day 3 In the morning, after breakfast, we will have a workshop to familiarize ourselves with Asturian Jurassic jet, which comes from trees that populated the area more than 60 million years ago. We will highlight the unique luster and the most magical properties of a small piece of jet extracted in our coastal area for millennia. You will take that little piece of magic with you when the experience ends like so many pilgrims to Santiago who passed through our region for centuries. Free afternoon that you can dedicate to visit points of interest in the area (Rí a Villaviciosa, Tazones) and / or tour thematic routes such as the Route of Jet P.R. AS-199, which ends in an old mine where jet was extracted by hand until the middle of the last century. In the evening we invite you to a tasting of products from our eco-farm with a micro-theater performance in the Ecomuséu Ca l’Asturcón. - Day 4 Departure from the lodging after breakfast. If you want to know the environment inform and advise smallñas thematic routes or points of interestés to know the natural territory of the Ría de Villaviciosa and the maritime landscape of the coastal rasa (jurásica coast).

Ospreys and Bearded Vultures: Soaring Once Again Over the Cantabrian Mountains

An experience dedicated to these two magnificent birds of prey: the osprey and the bearded vulture, which have returned to the skies over Santander Bay (Cantabria) and the Picos de Europa (Asturias), respectively.

Travel and lodging are the responsibility of the client, for greater convenience and flexibility in the visitor’s schedule. We handle the two guided observation activities focused on these two spectacular birds.

The first day focuses on a visit to the Asturian section of the Picos de Europa National Park, a Natura 2000 site and a Biosphere Reserve. This is where the bearded vulture reintroduction project is carried out. The activity will take place in the Covadonga Lakes area, where the acclimatization cages for the vultures—which come from the Pyrenees and, starting in 2024, also from Cazorla—are located. The vultures will spend a period in these cages before being released. At the Mirador de la Reina is the feeding station used to teach young bearded vultures social behavior.

The second day features a guided boat tour that travels through the Miera River estuary in Santander Bay, traveling about 5 nautical miles upstream with interpretation of two Natura 2000 sites, and focusing on birdwatching, with the osprey as the flagship species (since navigating the Miera River requires high tide, we schedule the days and times when this service is available annually). The tour concludes with a geological interpretation route highlighting the newly designated Costa Quebrada Geopark.

Spring and fall are the seasons when this activity is organized.

Fridays are the best days for this activity, as that is when food is brought in and activity is at its peak.

Follow the trail of the great wings reclaiming their kingdom amid the salt flats and rocky cliffs. Witness the rebirth of two legends on a journey that connects the heartbeat of the Cantabrian Sea with the eternal peaks of the Picos de Europa, where every flight is a hymn to regained freedom.

The "millenary" chestnut trees of Apellániz. Izki

Apellániz is located in the Izki Natural Park, the heart and lungs of Montaña Alavesa. In 13 of its 13 hectares grows the best preserved chestnut grove in the Basque Country. Through this experience we will visit the chestnut trees -some of them millenary-, in a magical place, full of stories and legends, mythological beings and a great diversity of flora and fauna. We will carry out planting, grafting, pruning and harvesting work, learning how to manage the chestnut grove for its protection and conservation.
In its 1,500 hectares of forest oak, beech and heather, but if there is a charismatic tree and loved by its inhabitants that is the chestnut tree. With 13 hectares in which live 1,100 chestnut trees scattered in a strip that delimits the village on its western side, they protect it from the wind and offer shade and shelter.

In a fair that takes place annually in mid-October, its people honor these giants with whom they have lived together since time immemorial. Centenary trees, even millenary, of more than eleven meters of circumference are majestic in any of the roads that from Apellániz go into the forest.

It is especially in autumn when these places offer us their best clothes. A palette of ochre colors that start from greens, followed by yellows, oranges, reds to reach the browns. An explosion of shades that intoxicate the eyes of the observer who looks in silence.

Without forgetting the culinary delicacy they offer us: chestnuts, whose aromas while roasting transport us to our tenderest childhood evoking sensations and memories difficult to describe in words, but always pleasant and with a certain longing.

The great majority of all this work is carried out by the people of Apellániz, who get together when the chestnut grove demands it and carry out the maintenance work, all in a great atmosphere, as their effort is matched by the evolution of the chestnut grove. Always culminated in the heat of a fire and a good lunch that lasts until the afternoon.

A day in which the neighbors and the neighbors of Apellániz are proud to make known their chestnut grove, their culture, their customs, their traditions, the values that their ancestors knew how to acquire, to take care, to conserve and to transmit. A legacy that they are proud to have rescued, valued and transmitted. A knowledge that other communities can use to recover that ancestral heritage that was so hard to achieve, that is also hard to lose and that is worthwhile because it creates links, unions and synergies that go beyond the borders of our environments.

Emotional landscapes, conscious landscapes

In our experience "Emotional Landscapes, Conscious Landscapes" we connect with nature through emotions. The landscape has many sensory qualities that we need to appreciate the territory in all its richness and complexity, to improve our health and to achieve physical and mental well-being. All the experiences take place in natural spaces of great landscape, biological and geological interest. We communicate the values of the environment through interpretation and we connect to the emotions with the activities we develop to create an intense bond with the place. Emotional Landscapes, Conscious Landscapes" consists of a program with three activities that are carried out separately on different days or can be combined on the same day: 1. 2. Seas for the mind. 3. Sunsets at the sea. Contact us to coordinate how you prefer to enjoy them, if the three together or just two of them in the same day or in different days but benefiting from the price of the package. Additional information. Program: 1. Forest baths for health: it is a sensory experience to take care of physical and mental health. It increases well-being and stress disappears by connecting with nature, experiencing a guided conscious walk in a natural environment to awaken the senses. You reconnect with the natural world and with yourself. The activity begins with an interpretation of the landscape and its values. The approximate duration of the activity is between two and three hours, walking a distance of less than one kilometer over flat or gently sloping terrain, easily accessible. The benefits are, among others, the strengthening of the immune system, decrease in blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormone (cortisol). Perceptible feeling of relaxation, mental clarity. Improves states of anxiety and depression. During the activity, participants are invited to a relaxing infusion. 2. Seas for the mind: Guided by a transpersonal therapist and facilitator of emotional education, a conscious observation is carried out that accompanies the recognition of the emotions of the participants through the movements of the sea and the natural coastal elements. The human being lives the challenges of life experiencing emotions, building from them a complex psychic world that will be expressed in behaviors. Being near the sea fills us with inner peace, helps to calm our mood, to relax and feel more satisfied and even to be more creative. The sea breeze is loaded with negative ions that greatly benefit our body, promote cell renewal, restore nervous balance and stimulate the production of serotonin, the hormone of happiness, thus providing us with an enormous sense of well-being. The approximate duration of the activity is between two and three hours, walking small distances along beaches and cliffs. During the activity, participants are invited to a relaxing infusion. 3. Sunsets at sea: The brain needs to be excited to learn and few things excite us as much as a sunset, even more if it is from the sea. Sunsets have an impact on us, creating emotions within us. That is because the sunlight at sunset acts directly on some specific areas of our brain in charge of processing emotions, more specifically, the positive ones. Accompanied by a guide specialized in environmental education and boat skipper, we set out westbound, following the sun, one hour before sunset to cross the bay and reach the open sea. During the boat route the landscape is the protagonist, we interpret the Protected Natural Area of the Bay of Santander, the Miera Estuary (with special mention to the project for the recovery of the Anacute; guila fisherman) and Las Dunas de Santander, a natural reserve of the Bay of Santander, the Miera Estuary (with special mention to the project for the recovery of the Anacute; guila fisherman) and the Dunes;guila pescadora) and Las Dunas del Puntal, until reaching the island of Mouro, and the coasts of the Costa Quebrada Aspiring Geopark, places included in the Natura 2000 Network that allow us to talk about the vicissitudes that changed the history of the Earth, the processes that have given rise to the landscape of our present, and the human action that has shaped it. Photography at sunset from the boat will be the perfect way to capture the beauty and emotions that have made us feel these landscapes.

The experience combines different elements of interest: nature observation, ethnography and local history, adventure... through a compendium of activities that begin in the center of the village, next to its five emblematic calcination furnaces, followed by a hiking route that leads to some old iron mines in the process of naturalization. The guide explains not only the mining past of the area, its microtoponymy, customs, history and the transformation from a pre-industrial society to an industrial society at the beginning of the 20th century, but also the transformation from a pre-industrial society to an industrial society at the beginning of the 20th century. It also focuses on the process of natural regeneration in the old mining grounds, which has given rise to the existence of a great variety of mosses and ferns, including the luminescent moss Schistostega pennata, commonly called elves' gold, which is in danger of extinction. The experience has elements of adventure, such as access to the only mining gallery open to the public in Galicia, where the various speleothems (stalagtites, stalagmites, columns, pisolites...) are explained and observed, as well as some small horseshoe bats resting in the nooks and crannies of the rock. People who wish to do so, can save part of the route by jumping on the largest zip line in Galicia, which rises above the Turía River and connects the slopes of the mines. Children can also enjoy, at the end of the route, a children's forest with mini zip lines among the trees. This activity includes a guided visit to the zip line, with entrance to level zero of the Consuelo Mine. Approximate duration: 2.5 hours.
