25437 2 Sacred springs This route is a wonderful walk through meadows and pastures with beautiful views of the east side of La Palma, in the municipality of Breña Alta. We will walk through chestnut and laurel forests, crossing five ravines and six sacred springs decorated with crosses that invite us to take a break. These are captivating landscapes, with spots that encourage us to linger. In addition to the lush Canarian laurel forest, chestnut trees, an introduced species, have also spread throughout this area, and in the rainy season, we find many mushrooms. From October to January, La Palma is a paradise for mushroom lovers and gourmets. We will walk along 8 kilometers of easy terrain, except for the somewhat tiring initial climb of 350 meters. Otherwise, this is a hiking route that does not present any major difficulties. After 1.5 hours of walking, we arrive at a spring and resting place in the middle of the laurel forest; a wild and romantic spot. Towards the end of the route, we cross a traditional agricultural landscape and finally arrive at a typical La Palma bar where you can have coffee, beer, and, if you wish, something to eat. As an optional visit, there is a museum in the San Pedro area dedicated to tobacco, the cultivation of which remained a source of income for the island until the late 1990s. The activity begins early in the morning (between 06:30h. and 08:00h, depending on the time of the year) at the Vol de Coloms facilities, located between volcanoes. This is the time when the atmosphere is cooler and more stable and the wind calmer. We are at the Vol de Coloms facilities, next to the Croscat volcano, where we have the take-off field. You can have a coffee and some pastries before the balloon flight, while you watch, take pictures or help us in the preparation of the balloon. All our baskets have doors, so they are accessible to all kinds of public. The wind marks the course of our balloon flight, which lasts between 1 and 1.5 hours approximately. Years ago the meilas were harvested, which were highly valued for the production of cider, mainly in Asturias, a neighboring community, as they provided bitter nuances that were appreciated in apple fermented products. With the passing of time, the harvesting and care of the tree was abandoned because of the low yield and little by little they have been disappearing. This activity proposes the recovery of the meilar in the bush and thus contribute to the conservation of biodiversity. The meila is the wild apple of Liébana, is small in size and although it may have other nuances, mainly its flavor is bitter. The meilares are trees that can reach a large size, which grow in forests and can share space with other trees and shrubs in the environment. It contributes to the feeding of wildlife, such as brown bears, deer, deer, wild boars, rodents, etc. and many birds; all of them, in turn, can collaborate for the growth of new meylars by moving the seeds from one place to another. This can start a chain that recovers the meadows in the mountains, contributing to the diversification of flora and fauna. Picos de Europa The anthropized landscape of the Cantabrian coast, and particularly of the Picos de Europa area, is the heritage of a traditional activity that has its roots in a remote past, preserving a tangible and intangible heritage of unquestionable richness. The human being, in its natural integration in the harsh mountain environments of UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. A territory in which culture is articulated in a rational use of natural resources contributing to its maintenance and traditionally oriented to sustainability, in a way that collaborates in its complexity, participating and generating a rich biodiversity. The rich ecosystem from which people and livestock obtain their sustenance is intertwined with a cultural heritage, which, after going through various crises and substantial changes, is currently facing an uncertain future. If it was the mountain livestock and transterminance that, since time immemorial, allowed the coexistence with such an emblematic animal as the bearded vulture, it is also true that the changes in management and the irruption of new techniques and products in the same livestock world led to its extinction in the Picos at the end of the last century. Currently, thanks to science and the application of its techniques, organizations such as the Foundation for the Conservation of the Bearded Vulture (FCQ) have managed to get new pairs of Bearded Vultures to breed again in these mountains. In the course of this adventure, a certain way of working is recognized, which is indispensable for its reestablishment: a mountain breeding that, for many different reasons, is currently on the verge of extinction. The experience starts with a contextualization of the local, cultural, socioeconomic and environmental environment in which we find ourselves and in which traditional beekeeping has had, throughout history, a prominent role, favoring the integrity of the ecosystem and the welfare of the local community. In a first contact with this millenary profession, we will deal with the importance of the cortines (circular construction with high walls, typical of bear areas) and we will expose a trúebano (beehive made from a tree trunk) characteristic of the area. By means of a glass observation hive, we will observe the different inhabitants of the hive (queen, drones and workers), their characteristics, organization, behavior and structure within the hive, as well as the importance of the bee in the environment through the pollination process, promoting biodiversity and the guarantee of nutritious food. Finally, visitors will be able to approach the different products of the beehive through their senses: honey, wax, pollen and propolis. Through a tasting they will be able to feel, smell and taste these products and other derivatives such as honey cookies or jams with honey and km 0 fruits. Honey has a great variability in terms of colors, flavors and textures that gives it identity and depends on the floral variety or type of nectar collected. We will follow the old road that joins both of them through a beautiful forest of mixed human and natural use. The departure from the village of Soto will be slow, as we will stop several times to analyze what the landscape offers us: the meadows, the orchards, the traditional architecture (houses and stables), the ethnographic elements (mill, granaries...), the location of the village... We will talk about the Asturian peasantry, the arrival of industrialization in these valleys and the social and cultural shock it entailed, as well as its manifestations in the landscape and architecture. 22427 2 Cheese maker for a day Cheesemaker for a day is an ethnographic route in the Picos de Europa National Park where you will discover where shepherds used to work and live. We will be lucky enough to see and cross some of the most famous meadows where shepherds have always worked and herded their cows, goats and sheep and where the huts where they lived are located. We will enjoy a unique panorama of the Picos de Europa and we will be able to recognize the king of the Picos: the Naranjo de Bulnes, which will be present, in front of our eyes, with all its beauty. The route, about 5 hours long (2 hours one way depending on the physical level of the participants), will start in one of the most important villages for Cabrales Cheese: Tielve. Its cultural heritage, its houses and its locals hide many stories that we will be lucky enough to know. We will walk for about two hours following exactly the route that the cheesemaker makes with his mules carrying the cheese to the cave. During the route we will explain how Cabrales cheese was and still is made, one of the most famous cheeses in Spain and recognized nationally and internationally for the countless awards won around the world. Once past the "majadas", as the meadows, cabins and livestock are called, we will enter a spectacular beech forest at the foot of Monte Camba. A path will take us to the cave where the cheesemakers leave their cheeses to mature and where they work, clean and care for them until they are ready for sale. When we arrive at the cave, we will be able to enter and visit it and, if it happens that the cheese maker is working the cheeses, we will also have the possibility to assist and discover his precious work.
