Vestiges of the numerous civilizations that inhabited the sierra
It is impossible to understand the cultural and archaeological richness of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park without knowing its history. Populated since prehistoric times, this land has hosted civilizations and peoples who have left their mark and their heritage in the way of being and living of its current inhabitants.
Throughout the length and breadth of this region, the traveler can retrace its history through archaeological sites and cultural elements, recovered from the clutches of time, as witnesses of who were those who now inhabit these mountains and villages.
From the hand of expert historians and researchers, as is the case of the company Vestigia, it is essential an immersive tour that will take the traveler from the first age of man, to the recent past, through the occupation of Celts, Romans, Muslims and medieval Christians.
In the Museum of Aroche you can visit the Municipal Archaeological Collection, which shows remains of the different civilizations that have populated these lands, found in the numerous archaeological excavations carried out and promoted by the City Council of this municipality.
In this municipality should not miss both the Roman City of Turóbriga, founded in the time of Augustus (15-10 BC) and the annexed Hermitage of San Mamés, as well as the Castle of the Almohad period, from the twelfth century, and its historic center.
From prehistoric times, you can also visit, in Rosal de la Frontera, El Cromlech de la Pasada del Abad, and from the Celtic period, in Aracena, the Castañuelo site, a mountain settlement that orbits around the post-orientalizing cultures generated in the middle and lower courses of the Guadiana during the 5th century BC. Neither of these last two examples can be visited without the company of a specialized and authorized company.
