Our ecotourism commitment:

At Cabo Mayor Escuela Náutica, we believe that the sea and the sky are two natural treasures that deserve to be explored, enjoyed, and protected. Through our sailing activities, nautical training, and Sea Starlight experiences, we bring people closer to the marine environment and the night sky from an educational, responsible, and environmentally respectful perspective.

- During our activities, we explore topics related to astronomy, traditional celestial navigation, and stargazing, using historical materials, planispheres, telescopes, binoculars, and digital tools.

- We implement energy-efficiency measures by using LED lighting in our office and on our boats, solar panels to charge batteries, and water-saving systems in our facilities.

- To minimize light pollution during nighttime activities, we use red lighting on board, reducing the impact on astronomical observation and wildlife.

- We use long-lasting gel batteries with a lower environmental impact, as well as rechargeable batteries for the equipment used in our activities.

- We practice responsible waste management through selective sorting at our facilities and by limiting materials that could impact the marine environment.

- We avoid using glass containers on the boats and centralize the supply of drinking water to minimize waste during activities.

- We use marine paints that are free of biocides and formulated to reduce the release of pollutants into the marine environment.

- We properly manage specific types of waste, such as pyrotechnic materials, through authorized specialized companies.

- We have participated in scientific environmental monitoring projects, such as the España Azul initiative to analyze microplastics along the Cantabrian coast, contributing to the generation of knowledge about the state of the marine environment.

- We collaborate with biodiversity conservation initiatives by allocating a portion of the revenue from certain activities to the osprey recovery project developed by the Osprey Center.

- We prioritize local products in our experiences, incorporating items from Cantabrian producers committed to quality and the region, such as anchovies from Fredo-La Estrella del Norte, local craft beers, and other locally sourced products.

Sail at sunset under one of the most breathtaking skies on the Cantabrian Sea

The Sea Starlight VIP experience combines sailing, astronomy, and environmental education in the area around Santander Bay and Costa Quebrada.

Aboard a sailboat, participants will set out on a cruise timed to coincide with sunset to discover the night sky from a unique vantage point: the sea.

During the cruise, certified Starlight guides will lead an astronomical observation session where you’ll learn to identify stars, constellations, and other objects visible to the naked eye or with binoculars. Through accessible explanations tailored for all audiences, you’ll learn how to navigate the night sky, the historical connection between navigation and astronomy, and the main phenomena observable depending on the time of year.

The activity also highlights the importance of preserving dark skies and reducing light pollution. From the sea, it’s easier to understand how artificial lighting affects stargazing and nocturnal ecosystems, encouraging reflection on the conservation of our natural heritage and the starry sky. The area around Santander Bay and Costa Quebrada also offers an exceptional setting for this activity.

Sky observation is complemented by an interpretation of the coastal and marine landscape, helping participants understand the relationship between the land, the sea, and human activity.

The experience concludes with a tasting of local products from Cantabria, including artisanal anchovies from the Cantabrian Sea, cheeses made with locally sourced ingredients, and craft beers produced in the region.

This activity allows you to explore the night sky from the sea while gaining a deeper appreciation for the natural, cultural, and culinary heritage of the Cantabrian coast.
